Windows XP questions

Hey peeps ....

I know a few of you guys also have windows xp . I was wondering whats the best way to
keep on maintainance with it ?
For instance I've heard you can't or are not
suppose to defragmitize your disk . When do I scan the disk.... ect.
Basically whats the proper way(s) to be sure I don't let this computer go down hill ?

Nothings flashing or making warning sounds just yet , but would like to know so I can
keep it from happening.

Thanks ,
JSK
PS- sorry its not on topic .

XP

Which bounder told you not to defragment your hard disk? What a nincompoop!

You should regularly defragment the hard disk, and XP tells you when you should defragment. I'm assuming you know how to do this?

The old 'scandisk' maintenance tool has now been replaced by the 'error-checking' tool, found via...

Start>My Computer>[right-click on C drive]>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check now>[tick your options and begin]

Then you could clean your system up via

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Clean up

Install the free spyware detector 'Ad-Aware 6' from

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

...run it and safely delete all those nasty spy bugs off your pc that can slow it down.

Then download 'Winshampoo' install and run it. This safe program will clean your registry, drives, temporary files, and much more. I've been using it for a couple of years now without a problem. Contact me by e-mail when you install it and I'll tell you what else it can do.

All this should keep things running smoothly.

RE: Windows XP questions

Why thanks Dio !
I've been to that spot but was afraid to go on . Seeing this XP is still quite new and with past problems of not being able to run the scan/disk check on another xp computer system (which was my friends) I was certain you needed to do it another way .

Believe me I always updated things , checked , scanned ect my old pc , but like I said was a bit nervous about doing things to this one without consulting people who know the answers first . I rarley if ever read the directions or listen to Microsoft or any other tech support . Instead , I'd rather listen to the people who come here !

Thanks a million for getting back to me on this so quickly .

RE: Windows XP questions

Been impressed with 98se, and Me, and very impressed with XP. Thought I had a virus the other day, CPU was running at 100percent all the time for some reason, turned out to be a misbehaving app, deleted it, no more problem-o. The ctl-alt-del will tell you lots, if you read the other stuff/info as well.

XP- leave it alone. Don't tweak nothing, Windoze knows what to do. Tweaks are for expert users who (usually) only want their puters to do certain things, like play games for instance. But, you tweak the performance of one thing, and I guarantee you will fark up something else. Just leave it alone - Windows knows.

Recently helped a friend set up a new puter - piece-o-****e- My 3 year old 750P3 with good quality components and set up properly blows the doors off this guy's BRAND NEW 2.8Ghz COMPAQ cheap-o unit. I told him not to buy it, but he did anyway, cheap bastard, then he turns around and bugs ME when he discovers what a piece of ****e he bought - I hate when people do that.

Buy good hardware from somebody you trust who knows what the heck he's doing, leave XP alone, and it will be just great. My old P3 makes AVI's @ ONE GIG per minute with zero frame loss. Awesome. Keep the disk clean, defrag and such regular maintainance, and the thing will run beautiful.

Don't defrag? Bullshiate! Who told you that?

Ignore.

XP Pro - It's so good I'd almost consider paying for it.

RE: Windows XP questions

Oh, I forgot why I started a post in the first place.

XP scan disk:

My Computer
Rtclk C: PROPERTIES
TOOLS -tab

There are all the options you're looking for under the "tools" tab.

Defrag away. No worries.

RE: Windows XP questions

Hey thanks again guys ,

With my old pc (win 98) I use to do updates , check for things and scan , defrag .. you name it . In the end I added so many darn bells and whistles to it the thing became a monster !!!! I still have it for back up , but usually only go into it to grab a few files or pics here and there .
I guess by old habit I tend to want to do things the old way , but would hate to make a huge mistake with this computer.

With this one I really have left it alone.
Yes, Leege its set on auto-updates , but as far as checking it and making sure it doesn't just someday ****e the bed I'd like to know what I can (or should do) just so I don't kick myself later for not doing it .
Just for general maintainance .

Actually when I tell people whats in my system people are like - " What the F do you need all that for ? "
I got this one so I wouldn't have problems with anything . That includes space and memory . I'm a file pack rat and rarly delete things . With the old pc that became a problem , but with this one I can't see that ever being a problem . I'll more than likely die before this thing does : )

I'm still gonna drop Dio a line about certain things . leege I'd do the same , but am unsure if you have the same e-mail as you did when you ran that Jackie group ?
Us XP users need to stick together !!!!!

Ok , off to surf . The wife just went out shopping . This means I have all day to F around as I please : )

Thanks again I do appriciate the help .
