| Posted By: alfonsothefan Posted On: Jan 27, 2004 Views: 325 | sofa-settee-couch-davenport In that monstrosity below you will note that the good professor called your attention to the fact that a sofa or couch in the USA is a settee in Britain; in actuality, a 'settee' is nearer to a 'love seat' than the longer 'couch' or 'sofa' as we call them here in America. I believe the Scots and some Brits also call it a Davenport (probaby named after some Scottish pimp who designed the damn things), as do we in the USA. iow, a 'large sofa'. Also, for the curious, the Spanish word is divan, with the accentuation mark over the a. The word is pronounced "dee vahn". I'm certain fluffy will come in later with the French word. He's known or his utility and largesse. You can only get this suff here, which may be a blessing or a curse, one supposes. atf, sittin' on his L-shaped Davenport |
