Catfight terror at casino

A FORMER Sheffield United player was at the centre of an alcohol-fuelled catfight that left his former lover with a broken leg, a court heard.

When ex-England defender Keith Curle's girlfriend Germaine Smith spotted his former lover in a city nightspot she couldn't contain her anger, prosecutor Rachael Harrison told Sheffield Crown Court.
Smith, aged 31, is alleged to have confronted Deirdre Dunseath, who had previously been involved with Curle for two years, in the ladies toilets at Napoleon's casino on Ecclesall Road in the early hours of June 20, 2003.
Smith, of Ecclesall Road, then allegedly followed Miss Dunseath to the bar, knocked her to the floor and repeatedly kicked and stamped on her. She denies GBH with intent.
Miss Dunseath told the court: "She attacked me from the front while Keith tugged my hair and forced me into a crouching position. She started kicking and stamping on me violently, on my chest, ribs, thighs and knees, until the bouncers came.
"I was in total shock, and when I was picked up off the floor my leg felt like jelly and I couldn't stand on it."
Following the attack Miss Dunseath, of Walkley Bank Road, Walkley, had to undergo an operation to repair her broken leg and spent three months on crutches, the court heard.
Prosecutor Miss Rachael Harrison said: "There was bad feeling between the girls because Miss Dunseath had formerly been involved with Mr Curle. The defendant stamped on her leg with some force."
Miss Dunseath told the court Smith approached her in the toilets, where she was standing by the mirrors with her friend Francesca Ciccarella, 21.
She said: "She verbally abused me in an aggressive manner, and when I tried to walk out of the toilets she grabbed me from behind."
A short scuffle followed before she left the toilet and went over to Mr Curle, now manager of Mansfield Town, who was standing at the bar.
Miss Dunseath added: "I told him what had happened, and said 'this has got to stop', but then Germaine came out of the toilets and saw me talking to him, so she came over and attacked me."
Miss Ciccarella said: "I was really upset because I'd never seen a fight, especially one like that.''
Smith's defence team claim Miss Dunseath had been hassling Curle and telephoning him in the night since the pair broke up before Christmas 2002.
The trial continues.

By Brian Roberts

CORONATION Street's feuding Karen McDonald and Tracy Barlow are to have a second dramatic punch-up in a church.

And this time it will be a furious Karen who wrecks Tracy's big day - the christening of her baby daughter.

More than 15million viewers watched this week as Tracy - played by Kate Ford - ruined Karen's wedding to Steve McDonald by announcing he was the father of her child.

Violence erupts again after Karen - actress Suranne Jones - learns it was her love rival who wrecked her original wedding plans by cancelling her venue, photographer and cake.

Outraged Karen gatecrashes the ceremony and tells Tracy: "Do unto others like you did to my wedding. I really owe you. This is pay back. Big time."

She lunges at the stunned mother's hair and pulls her to the ground, telling the guests about her wicked scheming.

In the episode to be screened next month, Steve parts them but Karen punches Tracy to the floor as she is leaving.

A Corrie insider said: "Karen leaves the church past a gob-smacked congregation.Tracy is left lying on the floor, bloodied and humiliated.

STAGS BOSS IN WITNESS BOX

16:00 - 20 February 2004

Mansfield Town boss Keith Curle spoke out in court to defend his pregnant girlfriend, who is accused of breaking his ex-lover's leg in a casino.

Mr Curle's partner Germaine Smith has pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm after his former girlfriend suffered a broken shin bone in a 'catfight'.

The 40-year-old Stags manager told Sheffield Crown Court yesterday his relationship with 21-year-old Dee Dunseath was purely physical - and when they broke up she plagued him with late-night phone calls.

"I only ever saw Dee in the early hours of the morning and it was for a physical purpose," he said.

"We had been separated about three months when I met Germaine.

"Me and Germaine started staying at each other's homes but we were often disturbed by unwelcome late-night calls from Dee.

"Sometimes she would speak and other times she would stay silent. I even had a threatening call from a male and the call was made from Dee's mobile phone number."

Prosecutor Rachael Harrison told the court that 31-year-old Smith became angry after spotting Miss Dunseath in Napoleon's casino, Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, in the early hours of June 20 last year.

She allegedly confronted Miss Dunseath in the toilets where the pair had a brief scuffle and then again by the bar when she allegedly attacked Miss Dunseath and kicked her legs.

Miss Dunseath had surgery to repair her broken leg, and spent three months on crutches.

Smith says she did come to blows with Miss Dunseath but denies causing her injury.

"I'm a grown woman and a mum and I'm very embarrassed about this whole thing," she said.

"But it was just a trivial catfight and it was over in seconds. We both grabbed each other's hair and hung onto each other, but I never stamped on her or kicked her, and I definitely didn't break her leg."

WHY SING WHEN YOU CAN FIGHT INSTEAD ?

Battle of the divas

By TERRY JOSEPH

DUBBED "soca divas" by fete promoters who, as advertising gimmicks, insist on setting up "battles" between them, Denise "Saucy Wow" Belfon and Destra Garcia on Thursday seemed to have interpreted the rubric literally; resulting in a rough and tumble physical fight.

The two were, at the time, backstage at a calypso competition put on by the House of Angostura for its employees, when a conflict broke out over the not so simple matter of which of them should perform next as guest artistes.

Eyewitness reports said Belfon was listed to perform ahead of Destra but the latter slipped into the slot and began singing. Upon completion, Belfon reportedly addressed Destra, complaining of the latter's move. With no response coming from the accused, Belfon insisted and, again, according to reports, Destra threw a drink on her.

This reaction became the trigger for what sources said was a full-scale catfight, with hair-pieces, weaves and fists flying, shoes kicked off in the melee and general bacchanal replacing the calm that had existed just minutes earlier.

Contacted yesterday, Belfon declined comment, saying only: "I really don't want to talk about it. I am not pleased with the situation and I am still upset by the whole thing. I don't like that kind of thing at all. It wasn't supposed to happen but it did and I don't like what has come out.."

Destra was unavailable but was said to have been be so badly beaten that she was reconsidering public appearances scheduled for this weekend. Reports say her manager, Brian Morris was also dragged into the conflict and may have received a few blows as well.

Talk of the fight spread quickly and dominated early-morning radio yesterday, with attendant wisecracks from callers and commentators alike.

It was not as funny for officials of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO), who have hired both artistes to guest at today's Calypso Fiesta at Skinner Park.

TUCO president Michael "Protector" Legerton described it as "a shame that, whatever the issue, two singers should come to blows in public". He has offered to mediate, if needed, to help reconcile the row "or do anything that is required to stem the confrontation".

"This is bad for calypso in general." Protector said. "Things like this bring the art-not just the parties to the conflict-into public odium and affect others who may be trying to convince their principals that we are able to put on good, clean shows and just as we are seeing some of the younger artistes selected to lecture to schoolchildren.

"I cannot help but lay some of the blame for this episode on fete and show promoters, who may now wish to consider not using the kind of hype that makes their appearances on stage confrontational.

"If it is a contest, some of that cannot be avoided for the singers are cast in adversarial roles but for guest slots, surely they do not have to be 'versus' or doing 'battle' every time," Protector said.

Tough luck for Toughman events
State bans Toughman competitions

By Charles Edward Scott, Jr. | Senior writer
Published Tuesday, February 10, 2004

Kams' Wednesday night Catfights and Lava's Thursday Fight Nights are now history as a result of a statewide ban on Toughman events that went into effect last month.

And many students are not happy about it.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich banned organized Toughman fights that pit untrained and unconditioned fighters against one another. Emergency rules from the state Department of Professional Regulation banned so-called "Toughman competitions."

David Villalobos, senior in LAS, said he is disappointed that Lava, 1906 W. Bradley Ave., has been forced to cancel Fight Night, which included boxing and a wet T-shirt contest.

"I enjoyed the fights and really enjoyed the wet T-shirt contests," Villalobos said. "I also stepped into the ring, which was one of the cooler things I have done in college. It was a great experience. The ban of Toughman competitions should be lifted so others can have the fun and enjoyment I had at Lava's Fight Nights."

Kams' weekly Catfights and Lava's Fight Night were the featured events at both bars. Catfights were restricted to fights between girls, using oversized boxing gloves.

Lava owner Ted Pfeffer said his Thursday night business has declined 75 percent since the discontinuation of Fight Night last month.

"We have had thousands of fights over the last six years and we've never had a injury," Pfeffer said. "We don't think it is justified. But we're a small business and cannot do anything about it."

Francisco Ayala, senior in LAS, fought at Lava several times last year. He said he is disappointed in the state's decision to outlaw Toughman competitions. Ayala had recently agreed to fight another friend this semester at Lava.

"They should reinstate boxing," Ayala said. "We don't prevent people from climbing thousands of feet into the air on some rock because they are putting their lives in danger. People in amateur fights are adults who willingly volunteer and know what they are getting into. Why is it OK to take some people's freedom away and not others?"

Kams' last Catfight was in December, and Lava's last fight was in January.

Kams bar manager Jeff Ottens said the bar is now promoting Battle of the Bartender and Miller Lite glasses on Wednesday nights.

"Some people came in tonight and asked if we were having catfights and they walked right out the door," Ottens said Wednesday night. "There were a lot of die-hard fans for the catfights."

Elyse Harshbarger, freshman at Parkland Community College, went to Kams frequently on Wednesdays.

"What are we supposed to do on Wednesday nights?" Harshbarger said.

Promoters and participants of ultimate fighting matches must now follow the same rules as professional boxing. The rules call for stringent class and weight measurements when pairing fighters. They also require unlicensed one and two-day elimination tournaments to be approved by reputable boxing organizations.

Illinois is the 14th state to ban Toughman fights. At least 12 people have died during contests nationally since 1979, according to Blagojevich's office. Any Toughman competition should be reported to the state by calling (312) 814-4500.

Who told you about the machine.

Ha ha ha! Sheffield and Ecclesall Road. I've walked up that road to University hundreds of times. Napoleons Casino, I know that place too. I was born in Sheffield. Me and Hutch met up there when we met, and I was recently sacked from a job I used to do in Sheffield. Sheffield is cool!

That picture, it looks familiar, (possibly Emmerdale Farm) but I don't watch soaps so I'll ask my friend to have a look next time he's here.

Good research there JSK.

HHHmmmmmmm...........

....Photos LOOK like "Corrie", or "Emmerdale" as we call it over here (joke). It`s hard to watch for catfights in soapland, as you have to sit through half an hour of uncontrolled hormonal male-bashing to see a pair of hatchet-faced shrews doing the usual unenthusiastic arm-waving for five seconds. -It`s so bad I`ve invented an hilarious game that involves turning the telly sound down & watching for any female character talking to a man NEVER ONCE needing dialogue neccesary to show their relationship. Whatever the show she`s inevitably sneering, while he`s snivelling apologetically "but, darling, let me explain,...... oh, crikey!" -It works on American shows too, only she`s more likely to shoot him at the end of the scene. -That actress who played Annie (phwoarrrrr!) from "Sunset Beach" summed it up in an interview on breakfast telly over here when, asked about the difference between British & American soaps, said the English soaps seemed "repressive" (She even got a cheer from the crowd)- That Brit guest star from "Friends" is the miserable-looking archetype, inspiring an impersonation by the horny-looking Ronni Ancona (British female impersonator,......no, I mean she`s a FEMALE who does impersonations,-if it`s a he then he`s got ME fooled!) catchphrase- (disgusted)-"I can`t beLIEVE you just SAID that!", kinda sums up the fun-killing atmos of brit telly for the past twenty years. Now "Sunset Bitch" THERE was MY idea of a soap!

RE: I tried ....

Hey Dio ,

I use to work with some Brits from Sheffield . Some of the funniest drunkards I'd ever met . All rugby players , all f-ed up ears ... all larger than 3 of me put together !!! I use to love their idea of "lets go out and have a pint shall we ?"
Hours later we'd end up closing down the bar
down from where we worked and then would hitch a ride from a scottish guy who we also worked with who didn't drink . I never before met a scott's man who didn't drink besides this laddy . Anyways I miss the dudes in a way . Such as life you meet people and always say you'll keep in touch and then never do . Reminds me of one side of my family . Two words - Weddings and funurals. (ok the and makes it three)

Isn't Joe Cocksmoker and Def Leppard from Sheffield also !?! You do have a lot of talent and good peeps from that fine clean city of U'rs Dio . I knew while copying and pasting U'd more than likely know these places . Glad U chimed in buddy .

And GG or JJ whatever U'r calling yourself today ...
Ofcourse you'll never see a catfight on the homo-sexual soaps you watch you 10 day old peice of cut up sausage glistning in the sun !!!
I myself usually find myself watching spanish soaps not only to watch the beautiful blonde haired spanyards , but to learn the language a bit more than just knowing how to insult them !!! Its true . Anyone who watches an American soap for a fight can get mighty grey and old doing so .
Or more let down than Leege's kids @ Christmas .

I know its Hard GG/JJ , but sometimes you need to do it for cheap thrills AND this post above basically tells you AND shows you that there will be a fight on that soap .
I left the rocket science out of this one .

Don't believe me see if I care ! Now get back to drawing U BGB ! Don't be that guy that makes a group and doesn't do up keep on it . Your not from Sheffeild are you ? Sutherland I prosume ?

Later Brits : )
