Dredging up the past

Report from Baghdad -- Opening the Gates of Hell

By Rahul Mahajan http://www.zmag.org/sustainers/content/2004-04/08mahajan.cfm

The truth is rather different. Falluja, although heavily Sunni Arab, was hardly in Saddam's pocket. Its imams got into trouble for refusing to obey his orders to praise him personally during prayers. Many inhabitants were Salafists (Wahhabism is a subset of Salafism), a group singled out for political persecution by Saddam.

In fact, during the war, Falluja was not a hotbed of resistance. Its turn to resistance started on April 28, when U.S. troops opened fire on a group of 100 to 200 peaceful protesters, killing 15. They claimed they were returning gunfire, but Human Rights Watch investigated and found that the bullet holes in the area were inconsistent with that story -- and, furthermore, every Iraqi witness maintained that the crowd was unarmed. Two days later, another three protesters were killed.

I remember Dio caught hell from his American cousins for bringing up this issue.

Yeah, not just counting the days, but...

...counting the seconds till June 30th.

Who in the hell can argue against how sick it is to see unarmed protestors get mowed down ???

Nobody.

Even though you posted this news 3 days ago, it's still something to be reminded about every day.

First off, I'm not saying that this particular human rights organization has it wrong as to what actually happened, but with all the damn fear, lawlessness, unreliable Iraqi police forces, confusion, etc., going on there daily, is it any wonder the troops might be over-reacting ???

They have to constantly walk a fine line between maintaining basic civil order when allowing protests and demonstrations, while at the same time protect their very lives when elements of the civilian population want to just as quickly shoot their heads off regardless. Now, additionally, the troops have to cope with and try to prevent ever-increasing numbers of hostage-taking.

Taking a cue from Rough, he's absolutley right: THIS is what the Pied Piper (Osama bin Laden) and His Merry Band of Camel C o c k - S u c k e r s are playing to. More music to their ears.

[Hey, since OBL is so damn good at hiding his damn ass, maybe we can broadcast word on CNN or Fox that we'd like to send him a contingent of psy-ops (psychological operations) to his hole-in-the-ground (hole-in-the-mountain ?) somewhere in Afghanistan and at least learn by listening to his advice on how to persuade these people that we really ARE gonna get the hell outta there by June 30th, and, if you behave yourselves, we'll do it even SOONER--call that a win-win situation--so it would be to your advantage not to cause any trouble.]

Only problem is that if Osama asks what we're gonna do about al-Qaeda, we'll just have to tell him we're planning to do, like his relatives would say, some "re-construction" (as in: demolition) in the al-Qaeda "family" business. (Osama bin Laden's family was for years in the construction business all over the Arab world, which is how he and his family acquired their money.}

Anybody have any Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPG's) or Portable Stinger Missiles (PSM's) left over from the days of Soviet/Afghan mujaheedin battles ???

Osama, where in the hell are you when we REALLY need you ???

;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) :-)

[P.S.: Lest I be misunderstood, Osama bin Laden and his mujaheedin were a major force in Afghan resistance to Soviet intervention/occupation of Afghanistan back in the '80's. That's why when the Soviets finally had had enough and withdrew, the Afghan "replacement" government (the Taliban) supported and harbored OBL and his mujaheedin followers and wouldn't turn him over to Shrub when asked to do so after 9-11. Result: Pentagon to Northern Afghan Alliance--HELLO !!!; Northern Afghan Alliance to Taliban--GOOD-BYE !!!]
