Pepper Gomez

With immediate apologies for being almost on topic tonight & not adding to the political stuff, might I point out that the great Pepper Gomez passed away this week. Though he was centered during his long career in San Francisco, he made several trips around the states and I gotta tell you the incident that I remember best about the guy.

For years CKLW in Windsor carried wrestling and the announcer was this piece 'a crap Lord Athol (everyone called him As-shole) Layton. Anyway, sometime around 1960 or 61 Pepper Gomez came to the Detroit area and was billed as the 'Man With the Cast Iron Stomach.' He offered to have anyone jump from the top turn-buckle while he lay on the mat. The idea was that some smuck jump on his stomach, to which Peppered jump up and say "arriba"! Well, one night Dick the Bruiser took the challenge, climbed the ropes and jumped...
RIGHT ONTO GOMEZ' BALLS...
Now I gotta tell you: My cousin & I were in stitches, Layton tried babbling something until some genius got smart & turned off his mike. For what semed like eternity, Gomez rolled around in pain.
Dick the Bruiser. What a comedian. You bozos woulda loved him. No, I don't know if it was an act or the real thing (and no, don't bother asking Jabberwonky), but it was, as Mastercard might say...
Priceless.

No, you babbling blob of bewilderment! The moral of the story would be more like this:

No matter how good a guy's act is he should always be wary of a fat ass like you coming along and COMPLETELY F U C K ING IT UP!!!

That'll be all Swabbie.....disMISSED!!!

RE: Pepper Gomez

I didn't know that Pepper passed away this week. I'm sorry to hear it, but glad that you passed on this info. Pepper lived in Castro Valley about 20 miles south of the lair.

I loved your story because Pepper and the late Ray Stevens pulled off the exact same act here in the Bay Area circa 1967. The only difference was that after Ray jumped onto Pepper's stomach from the third rung, he decided to go all the way to the top of the ladder then did "Bombs Away" on Pepper's throat. I remember Pepper clutching his throat, eyes bulging and flopping around the ring like a freshly caught fish. The studio audience was incensed, and Pepper's tag partner, Pedro Morales stormed the ring, chasing Ray off camera. It set up a title match between Morales and Stevens. Great Stuff.

BTW, I was rolling on the floor too.

Ya Bear, had to be an act; otherwise, ol' Pepper'd be called Peppina and move to the Castro DISTRICT.

RE: Pepper Gomez

ah yes, Lord Athol Layton, the great one in his own mind. He was hilarious.

The story goes that Richard T. (the) Bruiser once beat up all-pro Detroit lineman Alex Karras at the Lindell AC (bar) because apparently Alex had insulted pro rasklin in the media - saying it was fake and those clowns aren't real athletes, stuff like that.

I guess he didn't insult pro rasklers anymore after that.

I never paid much attention to the men once I saw the ladies they had raskle once a week. Big Time, and then Championship Rasklin are both totally responsible for me having this asinine fetish. I blame Raquel Dubios, Princess Jasmine, etc...they did this to me. Curses!

Don't know the timeline

of R T Bruiser's beating of Alex, but Karras played the title role in the pro wrasklin movie The Mad Bull. Saw it over 20 years ago; from what I remember, it was mid to late 70's movie. I remember liking it!

RE: Pepper Gomez

Wow ... I dunno why but Pepper doesn't ring a bell for me!?!?! Well the name kinda does but I can't recall what he looked like? Gee, I'd bet I could find out in about 2 seconds online though.
Sucks he died and sorry to all the Pepper Gomez fans here (Fonz)

(I see this idiots name was brought up)
Pedro Morales on the other hand I've heard of. That F-in dinkface did a full 180 on about 20 kids just so he wouldn't have to sign an autograph. What a wetback that guy is. Like I said about 20 of us little kids back in the 80's stood outside in the freezing cold to get the chumps John Handcock and when he stepped outside seeing all of us threw his arms in the air and made some comment while slamming the door shut on us. What a nice guy huh !?!? I think out of the group of kids I was the oldest and didn't really care ... infact I think I shouted something at him, but I'll never forget some little kid was losing it crying like a bitch (LOL)

Even worse the next weekend the jerk was on TV the next week talking about how he'll sign a million autographs for people because its the fans who got him where he was.
What a F-in liar.
Too bad he didn't make the list this week.

RE: Timeline...

Killer, the Bruiser beat up Karras at the Lindel Bar on Michigan Ave in Detroit as legion says in the spring of 1963 (maybe April??); they had a match soon after, in which Bruiser beat Karras up pretty good. Was it a 'shoot?' Probably not, but Karras 'knew' not to look too good against Bruiser.
Geez, this is over 40 years ago!
Time for my meds hehehe....

RE: Pepper Gomez

I remember reading about the Bruiser / Karras fight when I was a kid. The authorities believed that the fight was deliberately set up to promote their upcoming wrestling match. Apparently Karras strolled into Bruiser's bar and starting talking trash, yadda yadda yadda.

Karras actually started wrestling as a pro when he was a "student" at the University of Iowa. Apparently Iowa didn't pay their football players as well as did other Big Ten schools, so Alex wrestled because he needed the cash. He wore a mask to hide his identity, because as an All-America football player on Rose Bowl champion team, he was one of the most recognizable people in the state.

He has always said that he learned how to act while working as a pro wrestler.
