1 Non-Final Fantasy

The only one I really had a problem with was Final Fantasy 8. It wasn't a bad game, but it had the name, and certain expectations were not held up to it. I think that Square is trying to learn from the lesson that one left.

RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

Really, the Final Fantasy is just a name for the moment. A bloody trademark for Square. They know that there's a lot of fans out there who bites their nails whenever a game called something with Final Fantasy in the title comes out. Hell, in the good old days we had the crystals. But now? Nothing. We have a bunch of intrigue and mystique but not anything that is Final Fantasy. So, Square, give us the crystals back or just let FF drop dead. Someday they'll probably release a Mechwarrior game! THE HORROR!!!

RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

Would you actually want to play a series where EVERY installment is based on a crystal. Bah! Bah I say!

The reason they switched is because it was getting old. They brought it back with 9, and we all know how THAT turned out (average, for the record). I say keep innovating the stories. Just don't hand us another FF8. While not bad, after FF7, you just can't do that to the people. Keep it fresh, keep it entertaining, keep it more creative than gathering crystals and I'll be a happy man.

The crystals

The crystals started the FF-series and I can't think of anything else to use in a game like such. Really, the FFs not featuring the crystals were sort of lame since they got a little bit out of character.

If the crystals go, let the name "Final Fantasy" go too. Don't think FF8 would've needed the title, hell you could just come up with a new title for these newcomers.

That's what I say, and I'm sticking to it.

Locue: Actually, I agree with you. After six they really could've had a different title. As a matter of fact, I'd say six could've had a different title also. It wouldn't have detracted from how good the games were, but it WOULD have detracted from the popularity. It's Final Fantasy, after all. It's a namesake, but it's also a quality standard. Square is known for that. FF is known for that. Do you not agree?

RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

I would agree that the name is used for marketing, Square did too because of the Final Fantasy games for the Game Boy, none of those where part of the Final Fantasy time line. And FF8 was the worst of the Final Fantasy's but it was still an interesting concept, it was too dependent on the GF's. FF6 was the best one ever though.

Agree (including a spoiler from the FF8 ending)

Number six is easily the best Final Fantasy even though it's not much fantasy in it (!)

They had the espers but really, after that... well... just a lot of mumbo jumbo about the usual stuff. Evil people, good people. Evil people killing good people... Basically: the usual FF stuff was there, EXCEPT for the crystals which always added a certain amount of crazyness.

The characters had something to protect, something to prevent. Yeah, I know it wasn't exactly real time but it added a lot more meaning to the story.

FF8 was totally **cked up because of the complexity and the story, the characters were way to much in need of the GFs, the espers and you have to wait until the end of the game to see the characters develop feelings and of course, the game highlight: watching Zell eating hot dogs so much that he probably starts puking a giant amount of hair gel (what's the deal with that hair?)

Ah well, the FFs won't go downhill. That's for sure. Even I buys the games (coughs) and hopes that the games starts to be good! Right now I'm currently waiting to see how FF Online will work out. It looks like way too much than Square can handle but if they manage to pull it off, they're back on track with FF.

Oh...

Oh, about the FF8. I like complex and twisty stories like anyone else. But FF8 went past the line with way too much to consume in the beginning. I liked Seifer though, he had that special "I'm the king of the world"-feeling and were more intelligent than the usual bad guy. So basicly, the dialogue wasn't bad. But since only Squall and Seifer are the ones saying something intelligent it doesn't affect the rating of the game. Number 8 will always be the total loser of the FFs.

But that's just me.

One More Thing...

I'd just like to add that FF7 is my favorite of the series. It had nothing to do with any type of crystals and was the first to stray the farthest from that concept. But IMO it had an amazing storyline and incredible character peronalities. I also agree with you in that I express a little concern for FFXI and that FF8 is the black sheep in the FF family.

RE: RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

FF7 Was, is and will be the best. The only reason why I even bought 8 was because I thought that it was going to be a follow up to FF7. Besides that disapointment I think I was a great game. I just dont think it had quite enough Final Fantasy in its blood. The chocobo quest was basicaly optional and had almost no effect on the game(If sony werent idiots and they released the PS1 PDA it would have beena great mini qiest, I got to try it out.)... I am still waiting for the follow up to FF7, I was all exited when I heard rumors that ff8 was going to be a follow up to ff7 that started off 500years later, and Clouds & Tifa's descendants were the main charectors....But on the other hand from what happend in ff7 where Aeris told cloud that she'd see him after it's all over and then the game ends just as it started with Aeris's face I assume that Airis came back to life....But then again I dont even know if the makers of the plot even know what happend...Maybe they left us hanging and let us beleive whatever we want.Just maybe... the freakin ff7 plot peoples just did it so I could play the game 30 times over trying to figure it all out ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

Every FF is a new story with new characters and a new plot. But I also heard rumors like these. One of my friends is actually believing that FF8 is about the descendants of at least Cloud. He's a real knucklehead...

Another rumor I heard is that it would be the sequel of FF6... What do you think of that?

RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

Each new installment in the series has nothing to do with the others. Completely dfferent stories and characters. There are, however, similarities in names and the like. Cid, Biggs, and Wedge are used often in the series. As a matter of fact, the name Cid has been used in EVERY FF game. If you're really looking for a sequel to FF7, your prayers just may be answered. With Square's announcement of FFX-2 comes another announcement of a possible FF7-2. They have their reservations about it though. As do I. I don't think a sequel would be a good idea.

RE: 1 Non-Final Fantasy

Yeah, FF8 was weak, but I feel the need to stick up for it. It did have a lot going for it, and the junction system wasn't that hard to figure out, my biggest complaint though, was trying to draw 100 of every stupid spell, you should of been able to buy spells, I mean, you have this money coming in all the time that you never get to use!
Also, since you have to watch the GF animation EVERY single time, battles become tiresome.
There's two Islands tho where you can fight lv 100 monsters, and i got squall up to lv 100 and junctioned ultima to his attack power so he did 5000 damage or so. So for me, i didnt have to rely on GF's as much in the later part of the game. But GF's still annoyed me.
Well, actually, the more I think about it, the less i like FF8. I mean, it would of been better too if the two main bad guys, Edea and Seifer had been bad all the way through. Just when I get used to hating them it turns out there was someone else to fight.
And there was charcter development for all of your characters, up until disk 2. There just was little to no side stories for your party that developed the main characters.
Cardboard characters, villans you can't hate, slow battles, and WTH was with the rank system? Now i just wish I had my 70-80 hours back.
