Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is a sensitive subject but it is one way to heal very many diseases, a man in china is being given stem cells inmplanted in his brain for Lue Gracason's (spelling?)disease or als and is slowly recovering my uncle who I was close to died from this diesease it basicly just devorurs all your muscle tissue I think we should explore more of this science because face it human life is a natural resource

RE: Stem Cell Research

It would cure cancer, aids, all brain and tissue damage, and can be used in conjunction with genetic engenering to grow body parts for amputees or organs for rejection-free organ replacement.

Sounds great.

Shouldent be to contreversial. In this country it's ok to abort babies and through them away, just not do a harmless prosedure to harvest some stem cells.

p.s. I'm against murdering babies (abortion) in almost all cases. It's only ok if the mother is having some major health problems or the babie is extremly deformed, in which case it's going to die anyway. Ops, rape, and cant afford one is not good enuf. Rape is border line, but the babie cant help if the father is an asshole mother****er. If you are raped go to the Doctor and make shure you arent expecting, they do have "the morning after" pill now.

RE: Stem Cell Research

Well, yes, stem cell research seems like a good thing. They can be useful because stem cells don't know what type of cell they are supposed to be yet. Therefore, if placed in the brain, they become brain cells, nerve= nerve cells, etc.
Adults have stem cells in bone marrow but for some reason, they don't work at becomeing anything but blood cells. So, for research, they have to use embryonic stem cells. That is where the controversy lies. They get them from aborted babies.

RE: Stem Cell Research

First off I am going to say that I am not overly familiar with this subject. I believe the controversy over the stem cells is not simply because they would come from aborted babies, but I believe they may fear that people would purposely get pregnant so that they could abort it. Again, from what I understand, you cannot just take the cells from any aborted baby, but like blood type it must be a suitable match for the person who would benefit from it.
So the fear lies in the hypothetical situation of a woman needing a new organ, or what have you, and when she is unable to find a suitable donor, she would get pregnant and then abort the baby so that she could use the stem cells.
Don’t jump down my throat if I’m completely wrong, this is just what I currently believe.

RE: Stem Cell Research

What's going on? Why are we getting all these sincere threads discussing current affairs? Where have all the sugar-hyped preteen internet nerds swearing profusely at Dragonmaster and Canada gone?

RE: Stem Cell Research

You're a doo doo head, Jack. I'm gonna send you on vacation to Canada with dragonmaster!

You're right though, I restarted the serious topic on the tv board. Not that anyone there will respond to it since they think I'm new.

Cheers!

RE: Stem Cell Research

Where do embryonic stem cells come from?

Human embryonic stem cells are derived from fertilized embryos less than a week old. Using 14 blastocysts obtained from donated, surplus embryos produced by in vitro fertilization, a group of UW-Madison developmental biologists led by James Thomson established five independent stem cell lines in November 1998. This was the first time human embryonic stem cells had been successfully isolated and cultured. The cell lines were capable of prolonged, undifferentiated proliferation in culture and yet maintained the ability to develop into a variety of specific cell types, including neural, gut, muscle, bone and cartilage cells.

The embryos used in the work at UW-Madison were originally produced to treat infertility and were donated specially for this project with the informed consent of donor couples who no longer wanted the embryos for implantation. In virtually every in vitro fertilization clinic in the world, surplus embryos are discarded if they are not donated to help other infertile couples or for research. The research protocols were reviewed and approved by a UW-Madison Institutional Review Board, a panel of scientists and medical ethicists who oversee such work.
So their left overs. Ones that wouldent be used anyway.
Pluripotent stem cells represent hope for millions of Americans. They have the potential to treat or cure a myriad of diseases, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, spinal cord injuries and burns.

Another brand new alternative is called "Cord Blood"

"Cord Blood" is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following birth.
Cord blood stem cells have the ability to treat the same diseases as bone marrow with significantly less rejection. Cord blood is collected after the baby is born and the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut. It is painless and safe.

RE: Stem Cell Research

I also think stem research should go on. just so Canadian stem cells are banned. We don't wanna get those miixed up in the stem cell gene pool. The Horror!

I kinda agree with him. Why mix the good Canadian stuf with our stuf? We have shown ourselvs to be corrupt.

good one richietwo....got a good laugh out of that one. yeah, keep those cells out of the mix. otherwise, we'd have even more americans saying "aboooot" all the time. it's bad enough that's its rubbed off on the people in Minnessota.

RE: RE: Stem Cell Research

Abortion is wrong. Therefore, stem cell research is wrong. If I knew there wasn't a higher power to answer to, I'd say "continue with the research." But since I have to meet the big guy eventually, I don't want to be connected to any killings, even if our society says its ok, I won't ever be a part of it.

Ignorance is bliss, huh Justin? You're the poster child for what's wrong in this country. Uninformed, and yet proudly loud about it.
