RE: So you say you wont vote.

Colorado is a stupid state.

That is of course, if the people of the state pass one of the referendums that is on the ballot this year. It would require Colorado's electoral votes to be split based on the percentage of the popular vote received by each candidate. Colorado currently has 9 electoral votes. So instead of giving 9 to one candidate, one would get 5 and the other would get 4. A swing in a few percentage points would only mean a single additional electoral vote. Presidential candidates would never again return to or care about Colorado. They would just say, F it, if I get the 5 cool, if not 4 is just as good.

For the love of God, people of Colorado please don't take yourselves out of the business of electing a president!

PS. I'm not sure about the motivations behind whoever is responsible for getting this referendum on the ballot. I'll try and look into it more closely.

RE: So you say you wont vote.

You know, a lot of people think proportional representation is a good idea. However, I think it is beyond silly to enact it in one section of your nation and not in others. I don't understand how that could even be possible. I would imagine there is some sort of Act or some such that strictly outlines how elections must be carried out on a national level.

I know in Canada, my province would not be able to change from FPTP to the PR system by itself for a federal elections. However this spring we will be having a referendum on chaning the voting system for provincial votes.

Personally I'm hoping for the Mixed Member PR system.

RE: So you say you wont vote.

I'm not too familiar with Canadian politics, even though my mother is Canadian and thus half of my entire family.

In the United States, the federal law says each state gets a certain number of electoral votes based on the population of the state. Each and every state can decide on their own how they distribute them. In fact, they don't even have to have an election! If a state government decided, they could give them to the candidate that can spit the farthest, and the people could do nothing about it. (Well, I'm sure the ACLU would file a lawsuit.)

You don't even have to hold an election. That's... well... crazy.

Kudos to them for wanting to try something different, but I don't know as that I like the way it's being done.

I'd explain how the system works here, but I'm sure I'd bore most of the board to sleep.

RE: So you say you wont vote.

And that, my friends, is why I would vote third party... If I could vote.

"To me that just says you're too lazy to look into the philosophies and values of each candidate, and too irresponsible to make a firm decision."

But what if you disagree with the philosophies of both? I don't want a president who says yes one minute and no the next to the same question. I also don't want a president that so easily gets into the business of other countries. I really wish we could go isolationist and just keep ourselves on the defense against everyone else. I can feel worldwide chaos starting up soon and it's all going to be the fault of whichever candidate is elected. Choose the lesser of two evils? Neither is lesser because they both add up to the same product: warfare. And, no matter what your philosophy on politics is, there's an entire group of people that feels the same way, which makes everything a cop-out against something. I can see this reply turning into a five page long rant, so I think I'll go now. I just reminded myself why I don't get involved in politics. When my mom gets home, I'm going to ask her who she's voting for.

RE: So you say you wont vote.

By the way, I AM a Texan, so does that mean my vote four years from now, when I actually am old enough to cast it, won't matter? Are you saying that that gives me an excuse not to vote? I'm only voting to protect myself against people like you. But because of the candidates, no matter which vote I take, third party or not, and even if I don't vote at all, it still won't matter, because I don't want to take ANY of the above choices. If I don't vote, I've thrown my vote away. If I vote third party, I've essentially "copped out," since everyone knows third party and libertarian party never win. If I vote Bush or Kerry, I'm voting for something I don't want to happen. So what do you do?
