Harris Miller is the Choice of Blacks and Women

The following is yet another endorsement of hi tech entrepeneuerial leader, Harris Miller over military industrial complex member, Jim Webb:

I know what a Virginia Democrat is: Someone who brings people together to get things done - someone who realizes that you accomplish great things only by including people, not by excluding them.

Today, I'm proud to endorse Harris Miller for U.S. Senate with my friends Senator Benjamin Lambert, Senator Louise Lucas, Delegate Lionell Spruill, Delegate Dwight Jones, and Delegate Roslyn Tyler.

Harris Miller is the candidate we trust to represent us in the U.S. Senate. We know he will be a strong and reliable partner for our community and for all Virginians. But there is another reason that I am here on Harris Miller's behalf today as well. I am truly and deeply troubled by the statements made and positions held by Harris’s opponents in the Democratic primary and the general election.

Those are strong words, but we know that Senator Allen has opposed inclusive ideas like the Martin Luther King holiday and diversity programs in education. We also know that Jim Webb wrote in 2000, "Affirmative action...brought about a permeating state-sponsored racism that is as odious as the Jim Crow laws it sought to countermand." In 2004, Webb called diversity programs "reverse discrimination."

I have seen racism, I have seen Jim Crow, and I have seen discrimination. Talking about efforts to ensure that hard-working African-American children have the opportunities they deserve and calling it 'racism' has more in common with the most extreme views of right-wing idealogues than anything the Democratic Party stands for.

I cannot accept Jim Webb's views and statements on affirmative action, and when these views become widely known, not only in the African-American community but among Democrats in general, I think his candidacy will have rough going gaining support among the rank and file. And I can tell you that without that support, he will have no chance against George Allen come November.

I am proud to be a Virginia Democrat and to have stood with Harris Miller, Bobby Scott, Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Chuck Robb, Doug Wilder and so many other Virginia Democrats throughout the years. As your Senator I will continue to stand with Virginia Democrats, and to advance the principles for which so many of us have fought so hard.

Yours truly,

Senator Henry L. Marsh III

Wrong, Dude.

How many campaigns have you worked on, Dem Dude? How long have you been in this game? I've been doing this stuff since I was in the Second Grade, and although I'm a freshman in college, I've worked on more campaigns than most people have in their entire life. I am a published analyst online. I know what I'm talking about, Dude. If I can warn Virginia Democrats about anything, it's this: Coattails DO NOT last. I guarantee it. Mark Warner's coattails are just the same. Look back at Virginia Governor history. Baliles ran on Robb's coattails. Wilder couldn't, because it had JUST been done. Wilder had to run on his own merits. Coattails need to be used sparingly, or they'll tear, and then nobody will be able to use them ever again. Give Mark Warner a break, no matter how influential he is, he can't carry somebody against a giant like George Allen. Somebody will have to run on their own merits. As the post below points out, Miller's merits are limited in the eyes of many people. Nobody can deny the Webb has done many great things for this country (soldier, lawyer, journalist, writer, Secretary of the Navy).

Miller = anti-American worker

Harris Miller is not an "IT executive". He is a Washington-insider...

As the long-time head of the ITAA lobby, Miller has adopted and advanced the most extreme and deceitful positions in support of outsourcing American middle class “high tech” information technology jobs.

Far from being a “businessman” or "entrepreneur" or any sort of "man of the people", Miller is part and parcel of the vast corrupt corporate domination at the heart of the anti-democratic special-interest driven politics of Washington.

Miller is one of the staunch defenders and strongest proponents of the misnamed “Non-Immigrant Visa” (NIV) H-1b and L-1 visa programs. (In his role at the ITAA he has sought massive expansion of these programs and quite successfully convinced Congress to regularly raise the caps.)

These programs, far from alleviating a “skills shortage” in the U.S., have been used as American worker replacement programs facilitating the offshore outsourcing of hundreds of thousands of high tech sector jobs. (Contrary to ITAA propaganda, these are/were not the jobs of the priviliged elite; many of these jobs paid no more than a middle/upper middle income.)

Not surprisingly, Miller is one of the most despised and hated men in America among people opposed to outsourcing and worker replacement programs in the high tech sector. Dr. Norm Matloff, professor of computer science at U.C. Davis, a self-described Democrat, has written so much critical material about Miller that it could fill volumes!

My own initial article about the declining opportunities for Americans in IT (“Lost Your Job Yet?” at www.computerworld.com See http://www.computerworld.com/printthis/2004/0,4814,92150,00.html) was written in direct response to a release by Miller and the ITAA.

Many of the formerly middle class American workers who have felt the blow of outsourcing/NIV in the tech sector have a visceral hatred of Miller and groups such as the ITAA. They’ve ruined lives and corrupted our government…

The Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party needs to know these things to make an informed decision.

< People aren't going to take the "I'm Warner" thing AGAIN. Kaine just used it. Warner's coattails are like everybody else's, eventually they where out. I'd rather Warner still have some strength come 2008. >

Wrong. People love repeats, especially ones they like and ones they know are proven performers. They trust Warner's judgement. By the way, Gov. Warner will be in attendence at Miller's next fundraiser.

Wrong again. So far, all you have written is your own personal opinions, none of which are backed by facts. You don't attract a good campaign team with uninspiring vision. These talented, proven performers are on Miller's team because they know Miller is the best candidate who can beat Allen in November.

Your long winded biased analysis of the Virginia regions assumes people want another old guard military hawk in Congress, they don't. They are sick of war and are suspicious of military men, especially those who are part of the military industrial complex. The people don't want more guns anymore, they want more butter!

Once Webb gets past his war and military record and talking about his books, there is nothing left. Allen would crush him throughout the state.

Yes, Miller never was good at writing war stories.

I knew that slogan would come eventually

I knew somebody was going to say "Miller Time." I just knew it was coming.

Dem Dude:
I like the enthusiasm, but I have doubts about Miller. People aren't going to take the "I'm Warner" thing AGAIN. Kaine just used it. Warner's coattails are like everybody else's, eventually they where out. I'd rather Warner still have some strength come 2008. Miller may have a good team, but he's not going to make any new waves, not going to inspire people. Plus, I've seen rumors about Miller from crazy conspiracy theorists that could, in fact, be used by the Allen campaign as truth. I firmly believe that not only will Miller lose, he will lose by at least 8 percentage points.

Why do I say this? Here's my analysis, area by area.

Hampton Roads: Vital to Kaine's success was his in Virginia Beach (the most populus city in Virginia). Also, Chesapeake and Suffolk, usually Red areas, went along with Kaine. These area focus heavily on two things: Military strength and ability to relate. Harris Miller has credibility in neither. Allen crushes Miller here.

Western Virginia: Miller would have two options. He could try the Mark Warner approach (try to adapt), but I don't think it would work. The other is too pimp the technological advances Warner made in SWVA. Problem is, Miller had nothing to do with that. He can't claim to be Warner's right hand man there, Kaine already did.

Miller would do well in NoVA and Richmond, but not good enough to win. Conservatives will be pooring in support for their Golden Boy Allen. Miller will not be able to compete on the same level as Allen.

Webb on the other hand, is strong where Miller is weak. He can relate to the SW Virginians, as he was raised there. He can relate to those of Hampton Roads, as he was a military leader. Of course he will be able to take NoVA (which is becoming more and more Democratic) and Richmond. Webb can campaign well in all of the state, Miller would rely on making sure every Democrat in certain areas votes. It almost parallels to Clinton and Kerry. Clinton was competetive everywhere, and easily won (twice). Kerry could only campaign in certain places, and lost because of that.

Only Miller Can Win

Now it's equal time for Miller Time!

Miller is the best candidate with close ties to both Gov. Kaine and Gov. Warner. Miller will win with a winning team that has proven performance.

U.S. Senate candidate Harris Miller today announced that he has filled his campaign’s senior staff and consultant positions with an impressive team of Virginia political veterans. Largely composed of former campaign aides to Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, the Miller team boasts a thorough understanding of Virginia issues and experience bringing Democratic victories to the Commonwealth.

“As a businessman, I know how important experience is to any team,” Miller said. “I am pleased to say that my campaign has attracted some of the best talent and experience this state has to offer.

“The campaigns of Governor Warner and Governor Kaine have shown us that Democrats win in Virginia when we bring a business-like, results-oriented approach to the real issues that families face every day. With this team in place, I am confident that I can bring my message to Virginia voters and start cleaning up the mess in Washington.”

The Miller for Senate Campaign Leadership Team

Campaign Manager – Andrew Resnick. Andrew Resnick brings a winning streak and a wealth of experience to the Miller campaign, particularly in the key exurb of Loudoun County. In 2005, Resnick led the underdog campaign of Virginia Delegate David Poisson to a six-point margin of victory, unseating eight-year incumbent Dick Black in the eastern Loudoun County district. Three months later, under Resnick’s management, Virginia Senator Mark Herring charged to a 62%-38% special election victory, defeating his Republican opponent in every precinct in a district including parts of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. He is also a veteran of several other state and federal races.

Finance Director – Adam Goers. Adam Goers comes to the Miller campaign after serving as Deputy Finance Director for the 2005 campaign of Governor Tim Kaine. The Kaine campaign raised $20 million, including $5 million from Central Virginia, the region for which Goers was responsible. In 2004, Goers was Finance Director for the Washington State Attorney General campaign of Deborah Senn.

Communications Director – Taylor West. A native of Altavista, Virginia, Taylor West was Deputy Research Director for the 2005 campaign of Governor Tim Kaine. She previously worked as Deputy Communications Director for the Democratic Party of Georgia and Research Analyst on the 2004 U.S. Senate campaign of Denise Majette in Georgia.

Press Secretary – Brian Cook. Brian Cook joins the Miller team after serving in the Administration of former Governor Mark Warner as a press aide and speechwriter. Cook is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he was Executive Editor of the Cavalier Daily newspaper.

General Consultant – Mo Elleithee, Hilltop Public Solutions. Mo Elleithee is a true Virginia campaign authority. In 2005, Elleithee served as Communications Director for the campaign of Governor Tim Kaine. Four years earlier, he was Press Secretary and chief spokesperson for Mark Warner’s gubernatorial campaign. In 2000, Elleithee served as Communications Director for Chuck Robb’s U.S. Senate campaign against George Allen. Elleithee has worked on numerous other state, federal, and presidential campaigns across the country. He is a founding partner of Hilltop Public Solutions.

Pollster – Geoffrey Garin, Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group. Geoffrey Garin is the president of Garin-Hart-Yang, one of the nation's most respected and successful political polling firms. Garin has a long record of experience on Virginia campaigns, including serving as the pollster on Governor Mark Warner’s 2001 campaign. He has directed the polling and created winning campaign strategies for twelve of the Democrats now serving in the U.S. Senate.

Media Consultant – Jim Mulhall, Squier Knapp Dunn Communications. Jim Mulhall is a Senior Vice President of Squier Knapp Dunn Communications, one of the nation’s premier communications strategy firms. In 2000, he was Campaign Manager for Chuck Robb’s U.S. Senate campaign against George Allen. Mulhall has two decades of experience in politics, governing and strategic communication, including campaigns in Texas, Iowa, Nevada, California, and Alaska.

Direct Mail Consultants – Jim Crounse and Alan Moore, Mack/Crounse Group. Jim Crounse, a partner of the Mack/Crounse Group, is one of the pre-eminent direct mail consultants in the Democratic Party. In 2005, the Mack/Crounse Group provided direct mail for the Virginia Coordinated Campaign. During his 26-year political career serving on Capitol Hill and as an operative, Crounse has helped elect many high-profile Democrats, including Senators Evan Bayh, Max Baucus, Byron Dorgan, and Kent Conrad, and Governor Bill Richardson.

Alan Moore is a Vice President at the Mack/Crounse Group. In 2005, Moore directed the Virginia Coordinated Campaign, where he contributed to the historic victory of Governor Tim Kaine and oversaw a comprehensive voter contact program which culminated in historic wins in solid Republican counties. In 2001, he served as executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia and became one of the youngest serving directors of a state party in the country. Moore also managed the successful 1999 Virginia House campaign of Delegate Albert Pollard.

Internet Operations - John Rohrbach, Bullseye Interactive Media. John Rohrbach has worked as an internet strategist and content provider for a number of Democratic candidates and recently served as Internet Campaign Director for the successful 2005 campaign of Governor Tim Kaine. Also a photographer and videographer, Rohrbach's work has appeared in political TV ads, print and interactive news media in Virginia and Washington, DC.

Progressives and Liberal Democrats irritate me

Yes I said it.. I am a Moderate, and a Conservative Democrat. Have been all my life. I am also Ex-Army, where I learned a thing or two in Korea about WMD.. and could tell from the signs that there were none in Iraq and the military KNEW IT. But I digress. THe point being just because James Webb worked for the Regan Whitehouse in a Military position doesn't make him a Neo-Conservative. He was born and breed in teh Military as was I and while in Korea in 1988 voted Dukasis.

The Liberal Left side of the party needs to grow up.. they want to talk about the Christian Right being eliteist, and not allowing all to come together. Give me a damn break. When a Moderate or a Conservative Democrat comes around they want to make them out to be a closet Neo-Conservative.

So forgive me and all my conservative democratic friends. If we support the Democratic party and want to get moderates elected to the senate and congress. It beats your alternative of nominationing weak candidates that pass your litmus test and yet are unelectable in a moderate and conversative state. Because your candidates LOSE and I rather have a moderate like myself in office than candidates like Allen and Cantor. Hopefully all the uber-liberals will come around and quit playing Don Quixote and realize America (and especially Virginia) is not as liberal as they are and the choices are support moderates, or live with the Neo-Conservatives.

As for the purely Miller Vs Webb

With the focus being on Washington Insiders, Corruption and lobbying.. and all its ill.. Is it a smart thing for us to nominate a Lobbyist? Not just that the president of a lobbying association ?

I am sure Mr Miller is of fine character and a good man. I am also sure the media will eat him up, and use him as a poster boy for how detatched teh Democratic party is..

Vs..

Mr. Webb who throws the spotlight back on the Republicans. Be it Iraq, be it lobbyist corruption, etc..

To me the decision couldn't be any clearer.

1. “But I don't like the fact that Harris Miller NOW changes all of his opinions…” ALL of his opinions? He changed his mind on one opinion. Even Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun county elected leaders questioned paper trails. This is not a cut-and-dry subject.

2. Well, if the word “Lobby” is 100% bad, then we better do away with the lobbying components of the League of Conservation Voters, American Medical Association, American Civil Liberties Union, United Auto Workers, etc., etc. There are certainly some really bad lobbyists in Washington. Harris Miller is NOT one of them, and I would never support and contribute to his campaign if I thought otherwise. Harris Miller is a very kind, intelligent, and descent man.

3. “He really believed them, and is changing them now in order to win, proving his is not a true man of principle.” OK, then let’s insert JAMES WEBB in place of ‘he.’ Picture this:

November 1st, 2000, Norfolk, VA. A press conference with former Governor and U.S. Senatorial candidate George Allen introducing former Secretary of the Navy James Webb. James Webb makes a public statement endorsing George Allen, just one week before election day.

I remember that day, and seeing a picture of those two, side-by-side, on the front page of the November 2nd Times-Dispatch. James Webb’s endorsement may have made the difference, and George Allen beat Chuck Robb on November 7th by only 124,367 votes (out of 2,718,301 cast). Oh, and Senator Lott (R-Miss.) became the majority leader after George Bush was sworn in as President on January 20, 2001 (Dick Cheney replaced Al Gore as the tie-breaker for the 50-50 Democrat-Republican Senate count); the Presidency, the House, and now the Senate were controlled by Republicans. Even George Allen admitted that Webb’s endorsement reinvigorated his campaign.

“…proving his is not a true man of principle.?” Dannyboy: Tell that to the thousands of active democratic supporters and volunteers who helped Chuck Robb in 2000. Most of us are still around, and Mr. Webb now has A LOT of explaining to do as a ‘Democrat.’ Five years is not that long ago. And a lot of us Chuck Robb supporters will be on the front lines come this fall.

You are right, Dannyboy. Principles do count.

Pardon me, Bill

But I don't like the fact that Harris Miller NOW changes all of his opinions because he's running for Senate. Either:

A) He really believed them, and is changing them now in order to win, proving his is not a true man of principle.

B) He didn't believe them then and was only doing what he had to do as a lobbyist, reminding people of the dirty L word.

With all due respect to Harris Miller, I believe he has no chance in hell of winning this thing. Webb is the only real competitor, as almost every major newspaper in the country has recently stated.

Not so fast...

To Loudon County Dem:

Sir: Two of your three arguments against Harris Miller are deceptive. Your enthusiasm over Mr. Webb is respectable and understandable, but to throw out two of these issues without digging a little deeper is, well, tasteless—particularly if you really are a strong democrat.

1. Regarding paper trails for electronic voting machines, please refer to Harris Miller’s recent quote in the following article; this is where he now stands on the issue:

http://www.computerworld.com/governmenttopics/government/story/0,10801,1 07696,00.html

Q: As the president of the ITAA, which includes electronic voting systems vendors among its members, you (Miller) said in the past that you opposed verifiable paper trails for such systems. For many people in the country, this is a very important issue because of accuracy issues in several recent elections. What is your stand on this issue as a candidate?

A: I (Miller) did oppose verifiable paper trails until about a year and a half ago. I was hearing from local registrars, including in Virginia, that they didn’t want the additional burden for administration and maintenance that the paper trails would produce with printers and other equipment. But voters want it. It has more voter confidence. My argument at the time was that if [a hacker] is smart enough to take over a [voting] machine and register someone’s vote internally for the wrong candidate, that they’re also smart enough to make it look like the paper trail properly says who you voted for. People could get a false sense of security.

2. Regarding the H1B visa controversy, your link to Dr. Norman Matloff’s argument is well intended, but the H1B issue is far more complicated (in a business and national technological growth sense) to rely on one, let alone 10, “academic research papers.” Your point is valid, and we do need to hear Harris Miller explain his rationale for the H1B issue, both as a former lobbyist and as a candidate for Senate.

3. Regarding the ITT issue, you linked the Complaint but you did not link Judge Hamilton’s Order to Dismiss. You’ll find that Harris Miller was not only vindicated, but the alleged charges were disturbingly false: Twisted to support assumptions rather than using facts alone. The Order was not too kind to the Plaintiffs' attorneys. It’s a pretty damning read.

http://www.insd.uscourts.gov/opinions/AN3800O2.PDF

From page 39-40: Plaintiff also relies on the fact that the individual defendants benefited financially from higher stock prices. As many courts have observed, nearly all for-profit corporations compensate executives for successful financial performance as measured in the stock market, so this fact does not support a strong inference of scienter. Judge Moran has explained: “If scienter could be pled solely on the basis of plaintiff’s allegations that defendants were motivated to defraud the public in order to inflate the stock price, ‘virtually every company in the United States that experiences a downturn in stock price would be forced to defend securities fraud actions.’”…In this case, the records of the defendants stock sales do not show any unusual pattern that would lend any support to an inference of scienter. The sales totaled $27 million, but they were spread out over fourteen months,…

Oh, and by the way. ITT’s stock (Ticker ESI) surpassed the $57.40 per share mark prior to Harris Miller’s resignation from the board in January (to run for Senate). In other words, the stock returned to, then surpassed the February 2004 pre-corporate crisis stock price of $57.40 (it dropped to $38.50 in one day). It seems that Mr. Miller was a very good board member to that company, its stock holders, and its employees.

First off I'm leaning Miller. I like Webb's views on the war but I don't think of him as a democrat. I was having dinner with someone who lives down the street from Webb and he almost spit out his drink when I told him that he was running as a democrat. Since when is being against the war good all that is needed to be crowned a dem? Webb's views on the South/Confederacy and his position on women in the military run against the very grain of why I'm a democrat! Should be a good fight.
