Blogging

Michael I heard you speak at a catalyst conference about this topic. At first I wondered about time spent as a leader blogging. I have given it lots of thought and believe it is good for us as leaders to be processing our thoughts and also for those reading. My church staff is encouraged by your blog, thanks for taking the time to share with more than just your organization.

Stereotyping

I have felt this way even as a SAHM! It's amazing what people think about how long it takes to keep up a daily blog. I too write in the early morning before my kids even wake up, but when you post each day, people think that's all you do. It can be frustrating. I'm not off the hook either. I stereotype and generalize more than I'd like to. Here's a bit about that from today's post.

CEO Blogging

Mike,
My son Carlos Whittaker, an avid blogger encouraged me to blog. I serve as the CEO of the California Southern Baptist Convention, 2400 congregations ministering in 72 languages to impact California for Christ. Your blogs have been instructional, encouraging and provided me with great insights. Continue to follow God leadership in your life. God bless...fermin

get a life

You should try to do something with people instead of spending more of your time staring at a computer screen. Get outside.

Blogging

Mike,

You should definitely continue. IÂ’m not a Nelson employee, but I look forward to your posts every day. Your insights are invaluable. And I know many people in the publishing community whose opinion of Thomas Nelson as a publisher has risen considerably since reading your posts. You demonstrate wisdom, vision, mission and strong leadership. Keep it up!

Yes

I appreciate hearing your experience, knowledge, and beliefs. I believe in your leadership and want to glean what I can. Few people have such exposure to their CEO's thinking. We are fortunate for you and what you share. I may not always want to adopt the specifics of your message, but there is always something I grow from it.

Thank you for your 45 minutes a day. :)

CEO's Blog

I really enjoy your BLOGs as it helps keep me informed as to what's important for the company and how we can do things better as a whole. It's the frequency that overwhelms me a little--I'd be happier with once or twice a week so I can absorb the topic better and have a chance to implement it rather than every day.

Thanks for reaching out to us!

To bog or not to blog

I belive you should continue to blog for several reasons; as a Thomas Nelson employee it give great inside for practical, every day work issues. As a individual it seems perfectly write to have a CEO sharing thoughts on organization and exceptional skills that every one can use in many given circumstances.

By the way, thanks for all the great tips, I have save them for those unique situations. I hope the middle management can read your blog and learned from every day experiences and bot merely theory. Thanks

Has blogging value?

Yes, I think it's very forward-thinking for a CEO to blog, and to be in "conversation" with one's various market segments.

On a personal level, though I suppose I would no longer consider myself an Evangelical, and have for over a decade concentrated my theological reading on the patristics and monastics, reading Hyatt has "reconnected" me with (newer) Evangelical works, of which I have read several since beginning to read your blog.

Thanks for taking the time to do so.

Paul

To blog or not to blog

I encourage the continuation of Mike's blog...it gives insight in an honest, transparent manner. It lets us know what's on his mind and in his heart. I have encouraged others outside the company to read the blogs.

Your Blogging

I am amazed by the daily value of your blogs. The writing is great (hello – you are the head of a publishing house) and very educational for those of us who are perpetual students. More importantly your blogs show us a glimpse into the soul/culture of Thomas Nelson in which you are working to influence. I believe this is a very strategic use of your time and will pay off now and in the future. Peter Drucker would always ask, “what contribution can you uniquely make?” Your blog is a highly effective contribution to the future of Thomas Nelson and the betterment of your readers. Personally, I want to thank you for educating and inspiring me.

The Little Things

Keep it up! Sometimes we tend to forget how much we can impact someone's life by doing so little. I tuned into your original blog "Working Smart" over a year ago because I wanted to 'take control' over my email at work. Since then I have been an avid follower of your blog. I especially enjoy your new blog and have taken from it many valuable points and ideas which I incorporate into my work life. Thanks so much for your dedication.
By the way because of your blog I have taken the next step by starting my own. Something I had been considering for over a year now! Thanks ...

White Rabbit

Too bad that there are some individuals that are threatened by you being so ahead of your time. I think the true question is, how are the few that spent the time to critisize your work ethic spending their time?
We all recieve tons of various e-mails a day and everyday i cant help but to be drawn to your motivational business saavy. I wish you were my boss, I'd call in sick less:) -catherine

Keep It Up

Hi!

I too say keep it up! I started my own blog after reading yours. I love it and have gotten great feedback. It also helps me to keep writing no matter what. I don't write everyday but I can see it is easier each time I do it. Thanks for the inspiration! You sound like an amazing boss.
