Yes, Keep on Blogging

Mr. Hyatt,
I too am not a Thomas Nelson employee, but a freelance writer and former director of marketing who finds the information you post helpful in both fields. I have passed along your information to my husband for use as he expands his business, printed out some of the postings to put in a reference notebook, and emailed others to friends. What you say is valuable. Many readers can benefit from knowledge passed on by a person in a management role such as you are. And as you say, communication within an organization is key. Write on!

Blogging

As a writer & non-employee, your Blog has been very informative for me- things that don't apply, I skip through; things that would be helpful to others, I pass on. I am pleased that you are willing to share your thoughts & experiences... I'm all for learning & not reinventing wheels.
Having had an administrative position I know how important communication with your staff is. Blogs didn't exist then; I'm sure I spent more time writing Memos printing & distributing them than you do writing Blogs. So I see as it as being efficient communication.

Do you keep blogging?

Absolutely! I am a writer, not a member of your staff. I have been helped my many of your blogs. I have also passed several along to my husband,a senior pastor, to be used in his staff meetings.

You're the judge

I'm not associated with Thomas Nelson in any way, other than an occasional customer. So take this for what it's worth. Nevertheless, you're probably the only one in a position to gauge whether your blogging is worthwhile because only you know what else is pulling at you. I tend to think that it's probably of significant value to your company, and for all of the reasons you cite. I'm not suggesting that every CEO should blog. Quite a few have tried it and abandoned blogging. But you have the skill set to do it well and apparently to do it quite efficiently.

Keep writing mate!

I got nervous at the idea that your post title might imply you were considering not continuing your blog. It's of enormous value to me and untold others I'm sure!!!

Keep it up

Michael,

I think you hit the nail on the head when you state, "The truth is that everyone is an expert." We all have a responsibility, a tremendous opportunity, to share what we "know."

And, yes, as a leader in any organization, one of our primary responsibilities is communication. Perhaps it is even the most important.

Thank you, and keep it up.

Is blogging an effective use of your time

That your team feels comfortable approaching you with this topic speaks loudly. In many organizations these comments would be made at the water cooler in "disgruntled speak" but not made known to you. For that reason alone the blog is effective as an aid for team communication. But honestly, I would bring I before your stakeholders at a town hall meeting, I forget what you call them, and ask for their input. Be prepared to abide by their decision, but I can't imagine them wanting less communication from you.

Mike's Blogging

Mike, as someone from outside your company, I think its worth noting that your blog is the only one I've tracked daily for some time now. It's inspirational, thought-provoking, encouraging on several levels and certainly good exposure for Thomas Nelson. If you ask me, you're doing just as much to expose your company to the market and keep it top of mind as any marketing dollar ever could. If you stop, you will not only be missed by hundreds - possibly thousands - of us lurkers out there, but your company will have to pay the traditional way to be on everyone's Doppler. The latter is a large enough incentive, I would think, to keep blogging.

Keep on Bloggin'

Mike, I think the corporate blog itself is a great idea, and your recent frequent blogging has perhaps accomplished at last what we all envisioned it to be: a place for the whole company (and even those outside of it) to talk and share ideas. I enjoy the comments to your posts as much as the posts themselves. Don't be discouraged by the naysayers. This is indeed a very valuable use of your time.

Keep Bloggin'

Jim Thomason asked me 3-4 years ago what my top concerns were with the company.....pay, titles, recognition, etc. I told him that while everyone would like to make more money, my only true needs at that time were:
1. Give me the resources to do my job well.
2. Better/more communication between upper management and lower-level positions.
3. Consistent application of policies throughout the company.

Obviously, your blogs help satisfy my top two needs (note: the third has improved as well). Count me among the 98% of voters(at this point) who feel that stopping the communication would be a step backwards.

Keep on Bloggin!!

Yes!!! Keep on Bloggin'!!

As a TNI employee, your blogging lets me know that you care enough about your employees to make the time to keep us informed, give us ideas to be more productive, and just to say "what do you think?" even after your long days here at the office!!

I appreciate all you do and respect the time that you take to share with us. Big change from when I first started working here!!

your schedule

Anyone who might feel that you spend too much time blogging, obviously doesn't know you very well, Mike. As a former assistant of yours, I know how busy and productive you are each and every day. You accomplish more in one day than a lot of people do in a week. What you do accomplish and write is always so interesting and worthy of reading. So from one achiever to another, I say...keep on blogging.

The CEO's blog

Michael, your blog has been a valuable resource for me, and I hope it won't be disappearing from my RSS reader any time soon. Also, as a former Nelson freelancer, I enjoy peeking through this online window into a company I enjoyed working with and continue to respect. Keep writing - I think it's important for the blogosphere to hear your voice.

CEO's Blog

Mike,

I think what you're doing is absolutely wonderful and I think that more CEO's should take the time to write things that are designed to help their employees. Not only does it show your excellent leadership skills, but it is also a way to invest in their lives without seeming too threatening.

And as a younger business person, who has absolutely no business training, I find what you are doing to be extremely helpful. Like I said to you in email a few days ago, I see you as my business mentor. Consider the fruit of your life in my life and others...it's huge!

So thanks, thanks for all you're doing and for being a wonderful example. Other CEO's would do well to learn about blogging and using it as a tool for ministry in business.
