Posted By: Andy Edwards Posted On: Jul 1, 2004 Views: 3082	He is a human being OK, so Saddam Hussein committed evil acts, many of them terrible - but, if it is wrong to kill just ONE person, surely it is wrong to kill Saddam too! People try to disguise the death penalty by calling it "execution" and a "sentence", but really, execution, murder and killing are all the same verb - the meaning being taking someone's life. What good is killing him or torturing him going to do? OK, so he'll never do those horrible crimes again - but if he's kept in a top security prison for the rest of his days, he wouldn't be able to do that anyway! Has the whole world gone mad?! America's "justice" system is not justice - it is based solely on the concept of retribution and revenge, which, to be honest, are petty qualities and not qualities to be admired. If we want to punish Saddam, consider which is worse to you - spending the rest of your lifetime away from your friends and family in a top security prison, or taking one injection and going to heaven! It's not even a punishment to Saddam - if you want to torture him, lock him up! Finally, one last thought. There are many of you out there who are saying "execute him, his an evil skum!" Well, let me just put you this question - how many of you would kill him YOURSELF? Erm...not many? E-mail me with your replies - I'd be very much interested to see who would.

Why should Bush risk letting Saddam have a trial back in Iraq (unless the outcome of such a trail is pre-determined)? I agree that it will be a bit of a mess if he ends up dead while we are holding him in secret. The whole point of the exercise is to have a display of his gradual degradation so that his long-term place in history is obliterated. It is Bush's successor in '04 or '08 that will, especially if that successor is a Democrat and if Saddam is still alive, be under increased pressure to cede him to the U.N. By then, the people of the USA will find Saddam to be old news. And let's just say Saddam developed some terminal illness in the mean time. Sufficiently advanced pancreatic cancer, for instance. We would turn him over to the U.N. and let them deal with problem of holding him or just sending him somewhere to die. If we want info out of him in the mean time, we will just play on his fear of a long and painful illness. If we were in a hurry about something specific, we might resort to what the Iraelis call "moderate physical pressure".
