Sephiroth

Sephiroth was grim. I think he was one of the greatest bad guys ever. Kefka? Kefka was just an annoying, stupid clown who accidentally got a load of power and went nuts. AND he had that stupid laughter that made me laugh my ass off every time I heard it :D

Sephiroth.

First of all, putting the "someone else" option there is just stupid. The entire point of this is a one, the other, or equal poll. You don't need some random idiot barging in with OMG IT'S LIEK DELITA or something.

Secondly, although it seems like Kefka should be more evil, he's not. He's just insane.

Tries to burn down Figaro in person
-See, that FAILED. Figaro is still standing a year later.

Enslaves Terra in person (insert really ugly sexual imagery here)
-Unimportant. How much evil does it take to stick a helmet onto someone?

Poisons Doma by himself
-Here's the problem. This is not as evil as what sephiroth did. Sephiroth personally stabbed the entire town. Kefka decided to poison a bunch of idiots who can't tell the difference between purple water and clear water.

Moves the statues, causing an apocalypse without help (how much do those things weigh?)
-He does that purely by accident. That doesn't count. He also doesn't cause the apocalypse, as the people really don't care. The only people who are removed are the people of Vector, Mobliz and Narshe. People are watching Operas during this "apocalypse". Come on.

-Meanwhile, Sephiroth cause EVERYONE IN THE WORLD to worry. People were spending their life savings and going on buying sprees because they were scared out of their wits. The people of FF6 are having auctions, watching operas, the people of Zozo just plain don't care. Everyone is alive and well in Figaro. Kefka is such a dumbass that he decided "Let's not fry everyone in Figaro."

Privately abuses Ifrit and Shiva, as well as other Espers
-Sephiroth kills your only hope of saving the planet. You can survive the game without Ifrit and Shiva.

Kills the Emperor without using magic
-This is an outrageous lie. The three statues shoot magic, therefore...he is killed by magic? Damn straight.
-Meanwhile, Sephiroth goes into a building, kills everyone there, and stabs Shinra. That's a lot more hardcore than say "Look, I'm protected by a magic barrier and have the power to shoot magic beams of light."

response to Shinryu

zeromus says hes "evil" itself, but any bum off the street can say that too. Ygdrasil and melbu frahma actually do evil things, making them way more evil.

Come on, this is easy...

It's Zeromus. How could it be anyone else? He is the Incarnation of Hatred, after all. You don't get much more evil than that.

Responding to others...

'What's so special about Shinra?': A good (and funny) point, but keep in mind that Square invented Shinra before Bush was elected, and I think it was just before the 'evil corporation' archetype started getting stale. It was also the first and only time a Corp. was used in FF.

'Zeromus is the ultimate evil, the incarnation of hate': Actions make the villain, not words. I can call myself the absolute incarnation of the lord of nine hells. In reality, that ain't the case. On the main topic, if you judge by pure actions, Kefka rules supreme despite having 400+ Beavis and Butthead style Imperial Soldiers to help him. To recount:

-Tries to burn down Figaro in person
-Enslaves Terra in person (insert really ugly sexual imagery here)
-Poisons Doma by himself
-Moves the statues, causing an apocalypse without help (how much do those things weigh?)
-Privately abuses Ifrit and Shiva, as well as other Espers
-Kills the Emperor without using magic

'If you want something done 100% right, do it yourself'

about Shinra

what is so special about Shinra by the way? Sapping a planet? Having an army? Conducting weirdo experiments? That's all in the news...

Sephiroth

I think Sephiroth is more evil. While Kefka did do worse things, I consider him more of an insane guy that lost his mind than a truly evil person.

Kefka...

Kefka is the only one I saw showing any actual evil, though in a rather childish manner.
I can't call Sephiroth evil...the poor guy was tormented to the point that he was driven insane. Kefka, although I hated what he did, it was the WAY he did it that was funny. Sephiroth was just plain cool, though.

Ultimate Evil?

This is in response to the person who thought ultimecia is the most evil, i think you are wrong there.

****SPOILER ALERT****
Im about to talk to legend of dragoon and tales of symphonia, if you havent beaten these games and do not want them spoiled, then dont read the rest of this.

the ultimate evil in video game characters is NOT ultimecia. it is a tie between melbu frahma (legend of dragoon) and ygdrassil (tales of symphonia).

Why melbu?
he petrified himself inside the stone, knowing darts dad would use it to protect the town when rose set it to fire trying to kill him, thus controlling darts dad in dragoon form, who then in turn controlled lloyd, who in turn controlled the emperor. then when he got the chance melbu reveals himself and uses the virage embryo to become the ultimate virage to destroy everything..... thats pretty evil.

Why Ygdrassil?
the humans were racist against him and his sister, so he becomes more powerful and eventually gets the strength to cut the world into 2 dimensions, making lives for his race superior to the humans by creating a terroristic group of the people in his race, only for him to gain more power and desire to destroy everything, all because the humans were rude to him and his sister (that ought to teach idiots to not tease others) hes rather evil as well dont you think?

In my book, either of those two would win easily in this poll, too bad we were limited to just psychopath kefka and wimpy sephiroth.

HE WHO HESITATES IS LOST

Ultimecia

Ultimecia...

The ultimate evil. This woman went as far as to take over the minds of people many thousands of years into the past just to reach her goal: to consume all existance.

There really is no past to her, as none is really given, yet...she gives off a feeling of...emptyness.

When you finally defeat her, you realize that events will repeat themselves...no matter what you do.

This is why Ultimecia is the ultimate evil.

I love these guys.

I could write an essay on these guys.
And I know a girl who actually did.

In observing their backstories, these two characters have a startling amount in common. Both of them were high ranking generals, both worked for a corrupt world organization, both were infused with an unnatural power, and both betrayed their leaders to death. As if that weren't enough, when whelmed with raw magical power, they both take on an angelic form.

With so much in common, it fascinates me that their personalities differ as dramatically as night and day. Sephiroth has an element of perfection (some would say it makes him dull.) That never crying, never bleeding persona he maintains up to the end is a pivotal aspect of his character. He doesn't get dirty, he doesn't stumble or fall, and most important, he doesn't make mistakes. If there's one thing Kefka is good at, it's making a mistake. His very introduction came in the form of a failure. He even gets run over by his own men. He jumps and yells and gets angry, and is not the least bit afraid to hide his emotions. Sephiroth doesn't even seem to have emotions.

Sephiroth is focussed, and extremely goal-oriented. This doesn't make him sane, however, as he was obviously severely deluded. But Kefka... Kefka never needed a reason for what he did. He acted entirely based on spur-of-the-moment whims.

A few others have mentioned sympathy. Although I hold Sephiroth in high regards, I find it impossible to sympathize with any cause of his, beause he acts nothing like a human being. Kefka, on the other hand, is extremely human. He is what you might expect from a real madman. He throws temper tantrums when he doesn't get his own way, he does unwise things just to see what will happen, and some theories suggest he may even be able to fall in love. Perhaps it's simply because the desire to be a god is an alien concept to me. But Kefka truly yearns for oblivion, and that is something with which I can sympathize.

So, in the end, who is more evil? The only thing that matters here is actions. Anything that goes on within their heads is irrelevant; even a saint is capable of the most evil of thoughts. And although their purposes may vary, it seems to me that they are equal in their blatant disregard for human life.

Kefka.

While one may argue that Kefka was just insane and that Sephiroth was not, keep in mind that Sephiroth was also insane. He may have had a plan, but that has nothing to do with insanity.

Seriously, after realising that he was just an experiment, he suddenly went nuts and decided to kill people and search for power.

I voted for Kefka because, while being similar in terms of complete insanity, he acted completely illogical. He was doing things because they hurt people. That's kind of evil.

Kefka

I mean, he has the laugh. To be truly evil, you HAVE to have an evil laugh, its in the rule books.
