Posted By: Anil Kumar Posted On: Mar 29, 2005 Views: 528 | RSS Rules Jaswant flays US offer, Govt's discordant views Pioneer News Service/ New Delhi The BJP on Tuesday said US's offer to sell multirole fighter aircrafts to Pakistan and India was a result of its own "industrial-military conflict and promotion of their commercial interests. The party also accused the Government of airing "discordant" views on the issue. Senior BJP leader and former external affairs minister Jaswant Singh said the proposed sale would "promote an arms race in the subcontinent. "The Indian Air Force, its current and future aircraft profile and needs are very important security issues, of great complexity, impinging upon our internal relations, financial outlays and indigenous manufacturing programmes, whether existing or projected. If there is a debate on this, then let the Government come out first with all necessary details. That is far preferable to some impromptu remarks. Aircraft, military or civil, are not grocery after all, he said." "The government's handling of the issue has much to be desired. The government is speaking in discordant voices and does not have a well considered approach" on the US announcements. A day ago the Prime Minister said he did "not know what is being offered to India" and added "this amounts to saying I don't know what is happening." Mr Singh said "as various aspects of the US-Pak F-16 deal intrigue us, cause concern and impact upon our security, some of them need to be elaborated. These are : a) The Government needs to clarify what the PMO meant when it let it known that the Prime Minister had expressed "great disappointed" about his deal to President George Bush. Why this great disappointment, when just a few hours later the same evening, the ministry of external affairs officially conveyed a very different message about this matter? b) The US-Pak F-16 agreement is of the 80s vintage, it was held in abeyance by successive US administrations principally on the grounds of WMD proliferation and terrorism promotion by Pakistan. The US State Department, therefore, needs to let the world, particularly India know about the improvement demonstrated by Pakistan, notwithstanding the AQ Khan, Iran, North Korea and such other matters being public knowledge? c) How do F-16s aircraft assist Pakistan in their fight against terrorism and check WMD proliferation? The BJP leader said it was important that the defence minister shared his ministry's assessment of the security implications of supply to F-16s to Pakistan and when was the decision to "consider" F-18s option was taken. He was also critical of the American authorities view that the US wished to help India to achieve its vision of becoming a global power in the 21st century. Mr Singh said "if India had to become a superpower it would emerge on its own strength. I find it some what patronising that the US would enable India to become a great power." |
