Flash to pass...

Of course this means the driver behind you thinks his/her car is faster than yours and wants to RACE! Grab the wheel and step on it! And don't forget stickers add 5 BHP to your car EACH.

Flash to Pass

When someone won't let you pass they are usually abiding by the law, doing 65 mph and... in their minds you are going to do so also. I would rather take my chances breaking the law, going over 65 to 70 or 75 and if I don't get into trouble, it is no big deal. If I do, then I pay, and the guy who obeys still has no right to decide for me. He is a moron to think he can control other. It is not his/or her job.

flash to pass

It's the (so far) 7% that admit they don't have a clue what the over-taking vehicle wants that worries me.
And as long as I'm on a rant... (triggered by the April 16 comment about slower traffic keep right etc.) Why the sam-hill are most of the "passing lanes" on Georgia 2-lane roads set up so the "slower" traffic is forced to merge back in to the passing lane?
Or let me pose this as a question: How many times have you moved over to the right lane only to have some bozo ease up along side and slow down holding 2 or 3 cars behind him, only to have the sign "lane ends, merge left" signal that you are going to have to slow considerable to try and work your way back into the line of "faster traffic" blocking your merge?"
All those lanes should force the "faster traffic" to merge with you, not force you to change your speed to ALLOW them to pass.
'Nough rant.

Left Lane hogs

Well, I see some interesting comments from many folk, far and near.
We have our respective state governments to thank for most of this, since there is no nationwide standard. Many States post the "LEFT LANE FOR PASSING ONLY", but "at least 46" is an exaggeration. A similar number of states post their highways with "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT", which, by the way, for the commenter from Anchorage, is how Alaska's laws are written. This does indeed allow one to legally drive in the left lane, so long as you are not "pacing" traffic in other lanes, and of course, other traffic is not overtaking you.
In fact, in Alaska, you can be cited for impeding the traffic of 5 vehicles or more, regardless of the lane that you are using. It is a 2-point moving violation aimed at the Winnebago crowd, and it is intended to curb the often stupid wonder twin moves that are sometimes invoked by those with less than a complete grasp relative vehicular mass, stopping distances, inclement weather, and obstructions to visibility, like maybe the "effing" Winnebago in front of you.

"Flash to pass" is not wrong!

Man, this thread has been going on for a long time! Here's my two cents.

Flashing to pass is not agressive or rude. It is a polite way of getting another driver's attention. We flash to let drivers know there are cops ahead. We flash to let other drivers know their high beams are on. We flash to let other drivers know they should watch where they're going. Why not flash to let other drivers know that they're in the wrong lane?

We Americans seem to have gotten it stuck in our heads that it is our God given right to drive in the passing lane, nobody better interfere, and damn the consequences.

"If I'm going the speed limit, I can drive in any lane I wish!" No, the law (at least in 46 states) says "KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS." If you are being passed on the right, YOU are doing something wrong!

Let us try an analogy:
If someone is blocking your way with their cart at the supermarket, do you politely say "excuse me" (flash your high beams, so to speak) or do you wait for them to decide to move on their own?

Flash-to-Pass

If I'm driving 80 in the left lane and someone is tailing me, flashing their lights, I consider that aggressive.

If there's an emergency, use the hazard signals with the flash and I'll move as soon as it's safe to do so.

Also, lots of people flash oncoming traffic to notify them of cops ahead.

flash to pass

I recall seeing something several years back where the state of VA was trying to pass a law that would make it a violation for a person to NOT move out of the way when a car behind them flashed their headlights. I have no idea if that ever became law, but I was very surprised at such a suggestion.

Flash-To-Pass Poll

It was really hard for me to answer this question, because I can't even imagine DRIVING in the passing lane...much less someone having to notify me that they are behind me and want by!!!
P.S. If you think driving in Atlanta is bad...try Anchorage, Alaska. OMG!

Light flashers

Should be drug out into the street and shot.

Especially when the freeway is empty, there are 6 lanes, and you are in the far right lane. And someone wants to count their nose hairs in your rear-view mirror, then flash at you?

That little monkey has thrown his LAST handful of ****.

passing lane

If people acctually learned how to drive this wouldn't be an issue, but since most of you have no clue, it's more dangerous to pass on the left since you can't see through the idiot that's infront of you. If there are faster cars behind you (never mind the speed limit) then you shouldn't be in the left lane. Get a CLUE!!!

For the clueless among us; If you "Keep right except to pass" you shouldnt be concerned about someone flassing their lights at you...

This is the correct use of flashing your headlights. They are there to warn other road users of your presence. If they are tailgating and flashing continuosly that would be different!

When I started driving in 1964 in Missouri, flashing your lights was in the drivers handbook as the method used to signal the driver ahead of you that you wanted to pass. An off-duty cop in Topeka disagreed.

i am going the speed limit and you want to pass me for what? Most of the time I see you waiting at the exit traffic light just in front of me after you pass me going too fast.
