RE: RE: why did you vote none of the above?

To those in this forum who disparage Aurora’s insistence on using language appropriately I would suggest reading a classic monograph written by George Orwell in 1946 entitled “Politics and the English Language”. (It is in the public domain and therefore available on multiple web sites.) One quotation from it is, “[T]he slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. … Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step toward political regeneration:”

Lars,

I sincerely thank you for submitting that passage. While it is indeed insightful, I do not believe those who could best benefit will heed it.
While I do not recognize your name, which could be my own folly, I look forward to future posts from you, as you seem well read.

Dear Aurora and Lars,
Upon that qoute we will have to disagree.some of the greatest minds of the world had poor grammer, The greatnes of a mind is not reflective of the literary skills the person has, most of all when they are merely carying a slight conversation, If you can look at a piece of information and completly dismiss it on grounds of grammer then you are acting fulishly, If you were trully a greater you can discus the topic not the grammer, otherwise you hide behind your grammer skills, so as to hide your inability for producing relevant infurmation.
Love,
Sure

Yeah I fully agree with sure there. If you only took on arguments with people with imaculate grammer you wouldnt argue much would you? You have to keep in mind to this is the internet. In a face to face argument we would not make such spelling errors and what have you. We would probabally take you to town just because we dont have to hide behind internet pages and spell checks to get our point across.

But I suppose you will just disregard this post, because of poor grammer, right?

Oh and sure, does it sometimes feel like your wasting time tring to talk sense into these pompus A-holes? I feel that way often, just wanted to know if its just me

Gee Dave, I don’t know about sure, but I certainly feel that way most of the time.

The point about grammar is simply this, if you want to be taken seriously, present yourself in such a manner that we can respect what you’re saying. As in person, if you wore a dirty shirt, and wrinkled clothing to an interview or meeting, you would be judged upon your appearance. The same principle applies for the Internet, you are judged not just on what you say, but how you say it.

And by the way, you and Sure were incredibly predictable in your replies. People, who cannot speak properly, often see no need to.

RE: why did you vote none of the above?

Alright, I have two cents burning a hole in my pocket, and I am putting them in (much to your collective delight, I'm sure). I just feel the need to address those who defend their grammatical and spelling errors weekly and dismiss them as irrelevant. I don't make a practice of bothering myself with correcting the writing of others, but some on this forum do, and I find it interesting that those who are being corrected seem to feel so much more annoyed about being criticized than embarassed that they're making a practice of leaving themselves open to such (valid) criticism on a regular basis. My friends, I would think that by now you might have gotten the point that these errors ARE relevant. While I can understand that the occasional typo sneaks in, particularly when topics are heated, I would think that one would make it one's goal to try to curtail the blunders and clean up the wording. I know it's frustrating when others insist on focusing on proofreading one's posts rather than reading them, but I would imagine that that would be all the more incentive to try to proofread them PRIOR to posting. Of course, once one does manage to post something that's grammatically and mechanically correct, one runs the risk of coming under attack ... "You know too many words" "Your sentences make too much sense" "You spell too many words right" (... how hurtful it can be when others point out our flaws...). Whether or not spelling and grammar are the issue, you must admit, those whose posts are a spelling and grammatical disaster are far more difficult to take seriously than those posted by those folks among us who seem to possess a basic grasp of the English language. I know that some of you are scoffing at what you assume is my suggestion that you compose your comments with a dictionary in one hand and a thesaurus in the other. That is not my intention, all I'm saying is that if you pay attention to your grammar and spelling, it becomes second nature, and the ability to write well and convey one's ideas without presenting a document that appears to have been penned by a second grader, is an invaluable skill. I realize this isn't an essay contest (there's a little freebie for the snipers: I'm sure that comment will keep you amused for a while), but if it annoys you to have others picking apart your posts like english teachers with vendettas, it is certainly within your capabilities to improve the quality of you're posts. (And if you have gotten absolutely nothing from what I've said, and you're completely satisfied with writing on a fourth grade level, you can amuse yourselves by criticizing me for misusing a word in that last sentence- assuming you can find it)

Your two cents came much to late in the week to be of much good, but thank you for the contribution none the less.
