one on, one off

I've refused to buy it because of steam and this stuttering problem, but a friend of mine has:

Athlon 64 3200+
Radeon 9800 Pro
1 GB RAM
No stuttering

Another friend has:

Athlon 64 3500+
Radeon X800 Pro
1 GB RAM
Lots of stuttering (and sometimes CTDs)

Go figure. (Wish I could give more details on their hardware loadout, that's about as best as I can recall.)

Half-Life 2 Stutter and no stutter

I also have the stutter. My System:

ECS K7S5A Mainboard
Athlon XP 2100+
768MB 2700 DDR RAM
GeForce 4 Ti4200 64MB
Soundblaster PCI512
Western Digital 40GB HD

At first I thought my trusty Ti4200 was to blame so I did a little upgrading to an

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Western Digital 160GB SATA HD

Unfortunately it still stutters.

Just as a test, I installed it on my Dad's PC which is very similar to my system before upgrading:

ECS K7S5A Mainboard
Athlon XP 2200+
768MB 2700 DDR RAM
GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB
Soundblaster PCI512
Western Digital 60GB HD

And guess what? It runs fine with no stuttering.

I built both systems myself and I keep them updated with the latest drivers (and I used driver cleaner), minimal tasks running, and free from virus and spyware.

All my other games run great. This stuttering problem really has me stumped.

Very bad stuttering.

Just today I finally got around to playing Half-Life 2 (I know, pathetic). Anyway, it has stuttered HORRIBLY since the first frame. It stutters in every level at every place every few minutes. I've got a relatively old system, but even with the settings turned down it still stutters really bad. Also, it takes 90+ seconds when it's LOADING.

Athlon XP 1500+

Gainward GeForce 3 64MB

The poll will be pointless

Because its being linked to from threads, dealing with the stutter issue. The majority without the issue will overlook this completely.

Another informal survey had it at 30% suffering the issue.
Also some people consider the stutter immediately after a load, the stutter bug. So yea ...

Stuttering with Radeon X800 XT PE

I upgraded from the ATI Radeon 9800 Xt to the ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum thinking that this change would cure my performance woes. The graphics are better but the stuttering is worse. I have a P4 at 2.66gig and 1 meg of ram. Also installed latest Catalyst from ATI. So far it has been diappointing.

Change of video card cured stutter

I, like many others, had the terrible stuttering problems. Whatever I did using the console commands, applying patches and switching off antivirus, firewall etc. nothing seemed to cure it...until I changed my graphics card. My old graphics card was a Ati 9600XT, my new one is a Nvidia 6800. Now I get no stutters, maybe occasionally the odd one, but only when I'm quicksaving. I do admit the stuttering on my old card was really bad, making the game unplayable, and I still don't know why a change of card fixed it???

how many...

I would really like to know as well what the rate of occurrence is of this problem (I have it as well) but this poll is probably not going to give the answer. People without any problems will be under represented because they may not even be aware that there is a problem out there so they will surely be less likely to stumble into this poll (or any other poll posted on the subject). Still, at least it's interesting to see some absolute numbers of people that have the problem and with some assumptions as to how many people will find this poll, you can extrapolate to get a feeling of how many people have this problem, in relation with how many copies have been sold to date (i heard a figure of about 800 000 copies).

It's not you, it's THEM...

There's a lot of chipping going on by folks saying the user is doing something wrong, or doesn't know his/her own computer. There is also a lot of smack being laid down about systems being too slow to run the game. I have three computers, and my oldest box is a 2.4Ghz P4 w/ Nvidia 5900, Audigy gamer, 1GB PC2700, 2 WD 80G ultra ATA/100 (no array). That box runs fine, with no stutters, as does box #2. My newest box is a 3.6Ghz P4, Nvidia 6800 Ultra, 2 X WD 72GB 10K raptors in Raid 0, 1GB Corsair Dual Channel XMS, and an Audigy 2 ZS. It stutters like a cartoon pig. I've built and configured more boxes than I have fingers and toes to count over the last 10 years. Every other game I have on the 3.6Ghz box plays like buttah. Don't take me for arogant. There are a lotta folks out there who could bury me in the "know-how" department, but I'm no newbie. I switched to 2 speaker, and dumbed down sound to medium. This made a significant improvement, but did not eliminate the problem. I didn't spend $165 on the Audigy 2 ZS to be dumbing down sound, and failing to take advantage of 5 of my speakers pi$$es me off just a tad. Stutter and all, this is still the best shooter I've ever played.

Stuttering is....interesting....

Man, I'm 35 and have been gaming since PONG...Pretty tech savvy too...but this stuttering thing is the lil' puzzle that just keeps on givin'...Perfect example is in the beginning of the game...when breen is speaking out in the courtyard...If i face the courtyard and "the Breen movie screen I get stutter...but when I look away at a wall or inactivity..sound is fine...also video lags for a bit as Breen starts his speech each time...I've tried EVERYTHING (driver updates, re-assigning IRQ's etc)and the only thing that fixed my problem was the simplest of all...going to HL2 options menu and changing to TWO SPEAKER MODE...No stuttering....which blows because I would love to be able to play with SURROUND sound...by the way, my system screams with every other game out there right now, (Far Cry, Doom 3, Call of Duty...etc....all in full surround...I just don't get it...here are my specs...and PS...HL2 graphics are fierce on my computer...I run VERY smooth at 1280x1024 with 2xAA, and 8xAniso...
SPECS...
Windows XP
P4 1.6 ghz,
128mb Nvidia geforce FX 5900,
768mb pc800rdram,
Turtlebeach Santa Cruz Sound Card,
Dolby Digital 4.1 Altec Lansing ADA885's.

HL2

AMD Athlon XP 2200+
512 DDR RAM
GeForce 5200 128

I am only able to play windowed mode 640X480 sutterring is minimal, but still there.

Last valve product I'll ever buy. HL2 was a waste of money.

Stuttering

I Don't know what is making other people's systems stutter or hang, but all the PCs i've played on it runs smoothly.

Here's my system's Specs

ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 3400+
1gig Kingston HyperX
ATI Radeon X800XT
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer (Original Audigy)
2x WesternDigital WD1200JB Harddrives in RAID-0
2x WesternDigital Raptor 74GB Harddrives in RAID-0
Plexwriter 52x24x52
LG Multi-Writer DVD

I've played this game on my system, all the way down to a "Lowly" P4 2.4GHz with a Radeon9800PRO, and seen no stuttering...

damn stutter

Specs
AMD 64 3400+
786 MB Corsair DDR400
MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Creative GeForceFX5900
Creative Soundblaster Live! 24Bit 7.1

Stutters lowerd, thanks to some patches, but certain areas still very laggy,
AND suffering under the "FX-Hack" from the "Valve - ATI" gang. Only via the tool "3D Analyze" and the ID-Hack (so that HL² thinks I have a Radeon 9800Pro) a bit more smooth.
