Feminism poll

I picked "Something different entirely," because I think feminism is multi-faceted and defined differently by many people. It did not satisfy me to say that feminism was "women being as good as men." The notion of lining up a woman's worth to a man's in the first place is something I believe, as a feminist, needs to be obliterated. I do believe there should be total equality and no more disparity, but I'd rather not settle for the men-come-first plumb line. To me, it would be like saying civil rights is blacks being as good as Whites, as though blacks are equal when we say they are or when someone acknowledges it. Therefore, I think feminism is pushing toward the truth of equality without retreat rather than waiting for everyone to get on board and say it can be true.

Feminism

Feminism is about getting rid of the idea that there is a difference between genders. It's the idea tha we shouldn't need to have the same respect as it should just be a given and that gender in many means and ways serves no purpose at all and when you really think about it, we're all the same and should be treated equally. It's about equality.

Feminism

Feminism is unique to everyone and has many layers. It could be your a woman who is in ****ty relationship after ****ty relationship and can't understand why men don't get it, or because a man got promoted and you missed out... again! Or maybe you a person of colour and can't gain respect or both, a woman of colour who has two layers of discrimination running against them. Or that homeless person who is the poor class who has been working hard but employers can't commit to someone who has no background or references to say they are truly reliable. These are the issues faced by feminists and not all feminists have to agree with each other but they respect everyones differences just the same. And to understand that it takes small steps to make a big difference, not saying that big ones don't matter but to be happy about any step you take!
This is what feminism is to me.

Feminism what it is to me

I don't think it is any of those options, as being equal, better, or worse than "man" is beside the point of feminism. It is surely about having no constraints to what you want to do decided on your female sex.Its the difference between a man wanting to have a baby, even though he physically can't, and having the wright to have a baby. I'ts about men excepting women as they are, without male guidance, suggestions or opressions. Not being better or worse than men. It something entirely different,in itself, these things don't; i believe anyway even come in to it.

Feminism

Feminism is all about being proud in the right spirit and attitude of being and living in this world as a woman. Knowing about one's rights and capabilities as a woman, carving a niche in this world and attaining mental and physical well being as a woman.

feminism is

Feminism isn't merely about equality its about embracing the female qualities. Being pleased to be female, the classic triple goddess (maiden, mother and crone).

I'm not sure how to explain it but all i can say is true feminism is much more then the quest for equality.

Gender Equality

Feminism is not about dominance or man hating. I am a feminist, so I'll tell you what it is to me. Most of the things some of you have said don't even apply to me. Feminism is gender equality. I am mostly in the Riot Grrrl branch. The man haterish group would be more associated with the second wave feminists. I am a third waver. I believe that all genders are equal. Male, female, transgender, or any other gender whether it fits in a box or not. I agree with gigja and Icha entirely. It's about being yourself regardless of whats between yours legs and not being judged for the same reasons. If I can wear pants and vote then my boyfriend can wear skirts and cry. I'd also like to add that there are females that are just as strong physically as men, if not stronger, and can do things such as firefighting too. Sadly enough, not many womyn want to be physically strong, because society dubs such womyn, amongst others as undesirable. And I intensely disagree that feminism has harmed society. The only harm I see to society is limiting ones self, and their options in life because of the gender and roles a society assigned. If you don't support gender equality then perhaps you should keep your opinions to yourself and destroy all your pants. Oh and don't forget, you shouldn't vote this coming election. Also let's not foget the brain-womb conflict theory.

Feminism

To me, feminism is being allowed to have our own rights and do w/ them as we please as much as anyone else. As bad as men, as good as men...We should be ALLOWED to be either, or both.

feminism is.

recognising that people are individuals rather than specific genders. that people have weaknesses and strengths, not because they have a penis or a vagina, but because they are individuals with different personalities and life histories.
Feminism is individualism. It isn't male hatred or female power. It is the embracing of individuality.

Feminism is.....

... Having equal rights as men but realising that there are differences between men and women and that's a good thing (that we should embrace). Supporting our sisters instead of judging them and bitching at them.... also realising that a lot of problems that women have are often at the hands of other women rather than men.....

Feminism

Moppyfreak,

You have my great respect for taking a stance in the world of feminism at the young age of 14. I agree with you completely. I am 29 years old, a wife, mother, and college senior. I think feminism ignores the fact that some people are just better at some things than other people. Everyone has their strengths and their weaknesses. Sometimes those strengths and weaknesses tend to follow gender lines and that's ok. Fighting against that general biological notion is, in my opinion, insane and destructive to society as a whole. Yes, women (and men) should always be treated with sincere respect. Respecting someone also involves accepting your own limitations and disadvantages while supporting someone else's advantages.

Feminism,whats it all about?

In response to the poll that i recently stumbled upon. i thought using the male of the species as the standard to measure against seems to slant the poll. Surely any measure for feminism post-modern or not, should involve the progress and industry of womankind throughout the world and therefore your yardstick would be women.

Yours responsively
andy

Feminism is...

women being able to be who she is. Throwing gender roles out the window. Women not being told what's attractive, and "forced" to fit that image. Women not having to be afraid to be attractive or to have sex with who she wants because of threatened reproductive rights or sexual predators. Feminism is kicking double standards or double edged swords in the nuts. Feminism is acknowledging the difference between "sex" and "gender." Feminism is not standing for women being treated as objects or lesser individuals. Feminism is about being a woman in your own way, and not by society's definition.

Feminism is being frikkin amazing!

man vs woman

i thing weve basically gotten there, women work women go places, its totally cool for chicks. i think right now some sort of feminist movement isnt necessary.BUT, all the feminist chicks i know are killer, and theyd probably be ably to get me into it. i think feminists should be worlking with like... the women of impoverished countries and stuff. women that are seriously helpless.
