dying trade

I AGREE WITH MOST COMMENTS ABOUT UNSKILLED `WELDERS`.AFTER DOING A 4 YR APPRENTICESHIP AND 5 YEARS AT TECH. COLLEGE IN A GLASGOW SHIPYARD. IM NOW WELDING IN AUSTRALIA.IVE BEEN WELDING SINCE 1978, AND HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A BUNCH OF AMATURES.DONT GET ME WRONG THERE ARE SOME GOOD WELDERS HERE, MOSTLY BRITS.
WE CALL THEM 5 WEEK WONDERS AFTER A SHORT COURSE THEY EXPECT TO GET THE SAME (OR MORE) MONEY THAN YOU.THEY CANT DO POSITIONAL WELDING OR MULTI PROCESS .MIG AND FLUX CORE HAS DE SKILLED THE TRADE A LOT.RECENTLY WELDED CHROME MOLY,IT HAD TO BE DONE WITH THE STICK. I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD DO IT.IM NOT THE HIGHEST PAID WELDER IN THE W/SHOP, THAT HONOR GOES TO AN EX LABOURER WHO CAN STAB PEOPLE IN THE BACK THE BEST AND IS FAST BECAUSE HIS QUALITY IS POOR.
SERIOUSLY DISSILLUTIONED ABOUT WELDING AND THINKING OF LEAVING THE TRADE

welders image

I have the WABO (Washington association of building officials) cert for SMAW and FCAW, Its the same as AWS cert. There is a lot of guys around here that call themselvs welders that havent a clue about out of position welding or even anything about the trade, this kind of attitude has degraded the image of welders. The WABO/AWS cert is really a mark of professionalism and dedication. I feel that these certs needs to be recognized and required through out the industry. Lets do our part to discourage this type of self-proclaimed professionalism and work towards increasing the public view of this craft.

welders image

I have been in the machining and welding trades for over 15 years. What I see is that there is an influx of non-professional welders that come in to the field and lower the image, pay and professionalism of the trade. Right now Im GTAW welding 1/2" sch. 10 Cu-Ni pipe. These are socket welds on board naval ships, using mirrors and other special tools. This is to the nuclear weld spec. This is a tough weld to perform. I see my talent and craft as specialized and as important as any CEO yet I do not get paid the same. kinda makes you go hummmm?

Welding Jobs Pay & Retirement

I've been welding for over 25 years,what
I have seen taking place is increasing low pay & lack of job security due to a flood of imigrants & unskilled labor. We're a dieing breed, once proud, but no more. I believe that the best way to fight back is education .We have to know the tecnichal end of our field. Welding is something you feel as well as tecnichal, you have to know what the metal is doing .That takes time & experience, something that does'nt happen overnight. I wanted to retire a welder, I even taught my sons but, they have to move into other fields to make a living. Now a person has to know how to do a lot of other skills just to keep a job. Upper Management is great, but they can't get it done without us "little people" .Currently i'm considering another trade but in my heart I will always be a "Welder"!

Welders jobs not Paying $$

I switched from the welding industry to the semi-conductor industry and more than doubled my pay for doing less work. I love the welding industry but it doesn't pay much. I received a scholarship from AWS, finished requirements for a A.S. in welding, and went into Outside sales for a distributor, (sales VS welding because the local welding jobs paid about $2 more than McDonalds). I made good money for a Outside salesman. But the semiconductor industry pays more than what I made with the salary, spiffs, commission, "free work truck", labtop, cellphone and all. I'm a third generation welder in the family but unless you own the shop I doubt welders have alot of money left over. Its a pity. I hope it turns around in the future.

production

Production is what most fab shops are interested
in.All they see is $$$$$$ they forget that half
assed welding endangers lives.I am a welder in
W.V.the company I work for makes me down hill
my roots with a mig gun. They barley give me time
to clean between passes but still expect a 100%
weld.

welders/land surveyors

I am County Surveyor for Sedgwick County, Kansas. I HERE YOU ALL. These people that think their practicing the profession are a burden to the society and more so to the public. Why have a profession if it is not a profession you can be proud of. I think the incompetence is degrading to the profession. Your just like land surveyors you have the incompetent that degrade us.

Welders work being taken forgranted

I have been welding for over five years now, and
I have yet to create the perfect bead. I would
like to see a person come in off the streets, and
do the high quality of work expected of welders in general. I don't see any change in attituide, though. Employers don't really consider welding much of a skill, unlike a new supervisor, or
payroll clerk. I used to work at John Deere, and
they were handing people a torch, after a two week crash course in welding. Mind you I ended up working with quite a few of them, and let me tell you. I think that if employers continue to overlook the requierd skills needed to perform a simple welding job, that they might benifit from skilled labor, more than just labor.

professionals

true professionals dont need to worry about the hotshot straight out of school,inspector,x-ray tech.or the wannabees. what we do need to worry about is the companies that are hiring single hand welders at lower pay to attempt to do our jobs.

Welders

There are WELDERS and "hope to be" kids who are getting the jobs as no one wants to pay for us WELDERS due to cut backs.
This boys do Mot know enough or care enough to do the procedures Correctly, God Help Us All,
I was on a job site where they were only doing 2 passes, and not good ones, on High Pressure STEAM Pipes.
I was harassed for doing the proper 3 Correctly, they said, "Whats the matter Old Man, can't you keep up any more"
These shoppers are getting paid by the Job instead of the Hour so getting done, out, and onto the next one as fast as possible is the name of the game.
