Sources say that Sargana escaped prosecution for many years because of his close links with a senior minister in the NDA government. In 2001, according to reports, Sargana had been caught red-handed with fake stamp paper worth several crores by the Thane Crime Branch, but had to be let off because of lack of evidence when the fake stamp paper was replaced by genuine ones.
