Posted By: Simi Posted On: Jan 10, 2005 Views: 2774 | Keep Right unless you PASS.. Actually the polite way to signal a car in front of you the intention to pass is by blinking your left turn signal about 5 times at a time, and then if that doesn't work you can briefly use high beams which are much harsher and could be dangerous for oncoming traffic. Check out http://www.ibiblio.org/rdu/7signals/ and http://www.ibiblio.org/rdu/drv-tips.html Oh yea, if there is heavy traffic, this doesn't work - just use any lane that works.. but when there's low traffic allowing for faster speeds - instead of impeding the flow, help clear the traffic up by keeping right whenever possible. Once again, keep right!.. if the right lane is empty, use it - then you won't have to keep looking in the rearview mirror to check for traffic cos they will all pass you on the left, and you can just relax and drive at your speed. Until someone is in your way, yield to faster traffic that is close before changing lanes, and move right back into your lane after passing if it is clear. Imagine yourself blocking in the left lane with no one in the right lane, and someone tries to pass on the right - this is much more dangerous because they may encounter slower traffic but are still trying to go faster to pass you. So they can either cut you off too early or hit the slower traffic (could be a truck) at a great speed. So many times drivers can't complete their pass, get frustrated, and start driving more aggressively. All these are reasons of unsafety.. All while you could have moved over and easily opened up a gap for the driver behind to quickly pass before encountering the slower traffic in your lane because your speed is slower than if the other driver would have tried 'undertaking'. Much safer too. If people keep right when they should, this makes the roads more reliable as drivers will have a better idea of what others do, and what is happening with the traffic flow. Also drivers who need to go faster get to go as fast as they want (could be ambulance). But please do not come up behind another car in the passing lane that is in the process of passing a few cars (by at least 5mph faster) and flash him before he even has room to move over.. So why not just everyone keep right? (unless you're passing).. It's wierd when cars move right after passing, and then move back left when I have passed them even though the road ahead is clear. Do they really want to keep monitoring your rearview all the time? and their bound to block somebody and cause a dangerous situation sooner or later 'relaxin' in the wrong lane... |
Posted By: Mike Van Horn Posted On: Dec 26, 2003 Views: 2971 | Flash to pass I have had this done to me and I think it is the only way to safely comunicate as opposed to tailgating and horn blowing. If one is paying attention no one should have to flash there lights at you if you see a car coming up behind you at a greater speed and there is room to do so just pull over it's called the fast lane for a reason and if you can't figure it out you don't belong on the high way. |
Posted By: J. Brett Howell Posted On: Feb 22, 2003 Views: 3002 | It's not Aggressive Driving! Often when trying to signal to the car in front of me that I would appreciate its pulling over, I signal by quickly turning my headlights off and back on rather than flashing my bright lights. Although this does pose a very minor and brief issue of vision at night, it is often perceived as less "threatening" by the driver of the car in front. I never cease to be amazed at how many drivers not only misconstrue such signals as threats or insults, and even more amazing is how many then take it upon themselves to pull over aggressively, let you pass, then pull directly behind you, tailgate, and turn their brights on. The sad thing is the complete misunderstanding of the situation - that by their actions it is that driver that is actually committing an act of aggressive driving. Likewise, the act of purposely not pulling over to the right when it is known that the car behind wishes to pass in order to keep up with the flow of traffic is also a form of aggressive driving as defined by Georgia law (you know, the person who not only will not pull over, but if you try to signal by flashing to pass, he/she slows down in an attempt to annoy/intimidate you). Check out the aggressive driving law in your state and see if it mentions deliberately impeding the flow of traffic as an example of aggressive driving. |

Posted By: MicheleG68 Posted On: Jan 7, 2003 Views: 2979 | FLASH TO PASS hmm... ? How else do we have to communicate with each other on the road?! OF COURSE, it is a way to "ask" someone who is driving in the FAR LEFT lane, and GOING SLOWER then traffic in the RIGHT LANE! That's WHY SOooooooooooooo MANY picked it AS AN ANSWER!!! It's a UNIVERSAL way to "talk" between drivers! Just like when you are in a lane and a truck 'signals' to move on front of you it is common courtesy to flash your lights to let him know he has enough room to move over. People like YOU shouldn't be ON THE ROAD!!!!!!!!!!! You probably don't SIGNAL to "talk" to people EITHER! FREAK!!!!!! I hate people that don't UNDERSTAND really HOW TO DRIVE! thedrivingtest.com |
Posted By: thedingo Posted On: Oct 18, 2002 Views: 2989 | light flashing. Hm... I didn't know that flashing your lights was a polite signal that you would like to pass... I think I'll remember that one. Not all states list that in their drivers' handbook. (This is the first I've heard of it.) |
