Welders in Canada

Hello all

I have been reading most of the posts and all I see is allot of people bitching about how bad it is. It is only that bad because welders let it get that way.

Statistics show that in the next 10 to 20 years the trades will almost be extinct because of the computer/I.T. crap, nobody wants to get their hands dirty anymore.

We need to take advantage of this and start a proper union to be able to handle the shortage of trade’s people.

This will be a supply and demand situation and the demand will out weigh the supply at an alarming rate. In turn the "RATE" we charge will only go UP :) and we all like that.

Like I said, let’s use this to our advantage and prepare ourselves for the future and come together and do this right.

If you live in Canada and feel the same way send me an e-mail with your thoughts and let’s make a change.

Teenage welder

I have an 18 year old son in Indianapolis who is spending half of his school day at a vocational school for welding. He is very interested in making it a career. However, we are unsure of where to look for any type of apprenticeship. Not sure if any unions offer this or not.

Any information gathered would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks.

Where to start fixing the problem

Where to start? Well I’m a 53 yr old rookie but here is what I’ve figured out so far.

1. Too many companies using uncertified welders. This is very true within the Department of Defense and state governments where contracts go to the lowest bidding minority company in too many cases instead of the company that has expertise in the field.
2. The image of welding and welders. Companies, project managers and the public need to be educated on the skills required so they better understand. As for the personal image of welders, yes it needs cleaned up. If you look like your uneducated or untrained and just working to get enough money for another bottle or another fix then your not going to get respect! If you need drugs to work then don’t get around me!
3. Yes to pride. By gosh if they don’t want it done right, then it’s not worth doing at all and the company isn’t worth working for because they are not going to last! Take pride in doing the job right and give a days work for a days wages as you agreed to when you hired on.
4. High School and Community Colleges.
a. Counselors. Here is another major problem area. Those knuckleheads need to understand welders are not the Liberal Arts types. Welders are the people who build America from the ground up and down below. They are people who generally are more mechanically and performance inclined and don’t sit very well in a desk for 6-8 hours listening to theory from someone who they can’t respect or identify with.
b. Programs of Instruction. They need to be updated with new procedures and equipment. A group of welding experts every three years need to come together and develop a nationally recognized list of required subjects to prepare a student after 1-2 years to become a welder. (Any list should include Introduction to Computers.) I would add a list of requirements be established outlining what experience and certifications one should have to teach each welding catigory.

I could come up with a little more but these are my major thoughts on the subject!
