reply to tim's "best alliance" question/post

1 is the best alliance; here's how good i think they all are:
1)good
2)bad
3)helpful.but mostly pointless
4)can be very useful, but the otperson is too likely to attack you
5)...stupid
6)useless
7)theres no one left to attack but russia and italy so it gets boring

Italy

The name of the Italian game is "Patience."
If there was a 2nd word, it would be "Timing."

Agreed, if you can slip AVenice into Trieste in Sp01, then go for it. Also, if you know that neither Venice nor Tyrolia will be attacked then slide your 2 armies into both on Sp01.
Whatever you do, KEEP TALKING. If you can't manipulate the game from the "weak" Italian position, then you can't do it from anywhere!!!

PS Breaking into the South of France is a lot easier than it looks... you just need the right friends.

Italy

I play Diplomacy in school and allying with Austria against Turkey is suiside. In my experiance moving to to Tyrolia and Venice on the first turn to attack Austria is the best move for Italt.

Italy

I recently had the misfortune of getting Italy as my power for my very first game. I was new to Diplomacy but I had heard Italy was the worst power to be. I didn't panic and I decided to get help, and I fopund it. Turkey fell into my back pocket. I then persuaded him to let me convoy to Greece by Fall 1901. This left me Tunis for the next fall. I then attacked Austria from the south and then from the west. After they were finished. I turned West to France and Turkey turned to Russia. I then won by collecting 18 centers from the already defeaten Germans and the stuggling French and English. Basically, dont panic if you are assigned Italy. It has the unique advantage of being able to be involved in both the main theaters(West and East)

Austria

It seems to me that theres a whole lotta ways that Austria can end up dead in this game. Me personally, i enjoy the fun of the constant risk, let alone the skill that it takes to be an international diplomat with your surrounding nations. I still stick by my previous post though, if Germany and Austria ally (for real) and know what theyre doing, they pretty much can easily destroy the opposition.

Italy

I am damn new at this game (I'm still on my first), but I am finding Italy to be hella enjoyable. I'm making assumptions here, but in a game with a bunch of newbies, grabbing marseilles is really easy, and a smart Italy (with Brit. help) should be able to divide France (if you count Spain and Portugal as french, which they might as well be) in a decent way so as to not be at each others throats while being powerful enough to kill most everyone. And if the mediterranean can be turned into an Italian Lake, losing should be really hard.
Perhaps this only works with the new and inexperianced (or not even, since my France killing attempts failed), but it is fun. Italy is perhaps the most needed ally after a country is destroyed, and can through around quite a bit of weight when it needs to.
Besides, being the fun nation doesn't require winning. It just requires ruining the well laid plans of others.

Italy/Russia

In my opinion Russia is one of the best countries to play because there are so many possible allies. Russia can ally with Austria eliminate either germany or turkey, they can ally with germany and take austria, they can ally with france and take germany, they can ally with turkey and take austria, and my favourite is allying Italy to take austria.

Currently im playing a game where im russia, and right from the start austria and turkey decided that it would be in thier best interest to take me out. I played 2 years with no allies because every one was intent on destroying france who now has 2 units and has 1 year left at the most. So right from the beginning I took sweden, Rumania and the Black sea, which in my opinion is pivitol in gaining the balkans. But anyways in the coming seasons I made an enemy of austry by constantly attacking into thier borders sometimes successful. With the rest of the world including Italy and Germany intent on France's demise I was alone against two powers so I enlisted the help of Italy. I moved into Galacia and Italy supported my attack into Vienna which was successful then i in turn supported Italy into Trieste, and then Italy supported me into Budapest and we continued to leapfrog like that until austria was finished. I think Russia and Italy is an amazing alliance when you want to get rid of austria.

On to the point of Italy not being that great of a power, well I argue against that. I agree that Italy doesnt have that many choices for allies but the best thing for Italy to do is to goad germany, france and britian into a war between each other(Remember diplomacy doesn't always have to include yourself, it can be used as a weapon to get others to fight each other), this takes them out of your hair and allows you to deal with the east, i suggest making an alliance with Russia or even Turkey and taking Austria either from the top down(with russia) or from the bottom up(with turkey).Going top down with russia is best used when germany is out of your hair though otherwise it could turn disasterous.

Italian Come-Back

Big Loser, the game is called diplomacy for a reason. Try to avoid having other nations hate you. Find a nation to make a deal with and work with that nation. If you are playing this game with people in real life and winning is this important to you, bribery is not out of the question. Give someone money to move how you want them to move; pay them half in advance, then the rest after they move like you want them to move. You might even try more subtle forms of bribery, giving a person who controls another nation a snack every day, or buy them lunch... be creative.

Italy

I just have to say it. I absolutely LOVE Italy. I've played probably around 20 games of diplomacy, and I've had the privilige of being Italy 3 times. Each time I decided to try a different strategy (attack austria, attack turkey, or attack france), and I've gotten first each time. I would have to say, though, that attacking austria right off the bat would be my least favorite option. I think Italy tends to get too marred up in the Trieste/Serbia area way too quickly. Attacking Turkey (Lepanto) worked, but there weren't any quick gains until I stabbed austria while Turkey was really weak. I think, on the whole, my favorite option is an attack on France. If you can get German support and Austrian non-aggression, Marseilles is as good as Italian in 1901. A lot of people advocate waiting to see the best available option, but I think a quick blitz of France is my favorite (however, it really all depends on who is playing and what you think you can make them believe).
