Italy

Italy is a great power to play. It just happens to be the case that few people know how to play it. It doesn't surprise me in the least that a person with a poor opinion of Italy also suggests that it MUST gain two in 1901. That's a recipe for suicide. Italy needs to start as a solid Austrian ally, or it will get rolled every time by R/T. Italy can let Austria be the senior partner all the way to the point where Austria is nearing a win. Because Italy will have fleets and Austria won't, Italy can always gain the upper hand in the south, no matter how badly it may be outnumbered.

I just won a game where I picked up a 4-center Italy position in F1907 (DEDO:paprika). Though I got into it late, I played the same strategy that has won for me as Italy many, many times.

I think that in a game with good players, Italy has a much better chance to win than either England or Turkey.

Italy should NOT be so hated (Austria should!)

I've played more Dip than I care to think about, and I have led every nation to victory. I have rarely had trouble taking Italy to the end-game, as it may be slow to grow (a WELL played start should net TWO centers), but that allows you to ally with powerful nations who don't see you as a threat ... until it is too late.

Austria, on the other hand, is a victim in waiting. It is true that you have the ability to deal with multiple nations, but only as long as you remain in the game - which may not be long. Austria is open to attack from all sides, and typically ends up the victim of an early stab. Especially in on-line games, Austria is often out of the game in three years. There are times an ally stands by Austria, but it is a rarity. More often than not Austria grabs Balkans centers that it can not hold, while losing Trieste, and from there its demise is certain.

Also ... Turkey and Britain have equally solid defensive positions, and played well will last to the end game. Good nations to play, by my account.

Play on ...

Italy

Anyone who didn't vote for Italy is either stupid or inexperienced. Any player unlucky enough to draw the green piece will usually resign themselves to the fact that 4 supply centres is going to be their peak in the game. Like an operation scar waiting to burst in a hot bath, the Italian player knows the inevitable; that he will indefinately be crunched as soon as people have the forces spare to do so.

Turkey

I'm surprised at how many votes Turkey has. They can easily ally with Austria and take over Russia, and then backstab them and take them over.

P.S. If anyone is interested in playing by e-mail drop me an e-mail: b_raf@msn.com

Germany and Austria are truly the most exciting countries. In both cases you are allowed to have diplomatic relations with every other nation. For germany, both england and france are begging for your help. France knows england is its biggest naval threat, and in englands case, he cant win without conquering france. Germany also has control of russia because of the sweden situation, has two even 3 builds, can effect the belgium situation. By far the most entertaining nation to play. Austria mean while has to deal with the tempting balkans, but always has a gauranteed build.

England is the way to go

I have never seen Germany get past 6 centers. I prefer the western arena to the eastern one, because is is open and you have more options. Many people have commented that Turkey is in a great defensive position, but England is almost impenetrable if you are even somewhat competant. An attack on Germany is simple, and while France is busy building armies, it is easy to attack from two sides with Italy joining in. Then, you find that as England you have twice the navy of the ITalians, and you can turn the corner and take the Italian centers as well, while at the same time taking St. Pete's, which leaves no powers in the north that can oppose you.

I agree with Andrew. You will have noticed Germany is black in colour, and is most usually coloured as grey or black in all maps, making its expansion more feared. No matter how well they "diplome", one cannot help but distrust it and fear its expansion. However, it is without doubt the best country to play, as it has to deal with everyone, but also not face the cringingly uphill struggle of surviving as Austria Hungary.,

Turkey

I think turkey's great im in a game at the moment where im pinned in against the wall, just 4 units surounding the black sea, with a convey from france, coming, Austria through an alliance with russia owns all of the balkins, and im stuck in the middle, but all in all im in a good position with an army in Sev ready to strike at Moscow.... i love turkey! Italy on the other hand is not my favorite, france on one border, who can get spain and portugal with the snap of a finger, and you left only to ocupy tunis and greece once in a while

Plz correct me if i am in error, as i have only played a few games in my time

Germany

In addition to Nick's comment, Germany also often carries the bad reputation of having initiated both REAL European world wars, as well as the Holocaust and Hitler - it's easy to convince someone that Germany's up to something - after all, they did it twice already, and were only taken down with help from the USA, a country which, according to the rules and unlike in real life, "will not intervene." Too bad GWBush wasn't president in 1901.

I do not see why so many people do not like Austria. If they ally with Russia, they pretty much automatically take over Turkey....

I fail to see why italy is so disliked, or why the winning record is so poor. You can join Austria (and sometimes also Russia) to take out Turkey, or you can join with one of Turkey or Russia to take out Austria. The only thing to fear is an alliance between Austria and Turkey. An unstable alliance and best, and when it happens you have an ally in Russia.

Personally, I enjoy the variety of possibilities.

Least Like?

It depends on what kind of array of enemies you face...clearly, if your playing with nervous novices who are out to destroy whoever they see as winning, you have a different game to the more subtle tactics enjoyed by the experienced player...

Any and all countries can be a challenge, depending who you face and what your style is. But I least like germany, because it carries a stigma in most of the games i have played as "this blokes gonna win unless we kill him first" - a feeling that altogether ruins the game...

Turkey is the Best

Turkey is located remotely and right infront of i are no less than 2 stars. Therefore, you have time to build your army and gain a position on russia in the first couple of rounds while the others fight. Then, if you use this advantage wisely you will win almost every game

France

I dislike playing France for no other reason that I've played it in about half of my recent games... I'm ready for something new!
