When Will EFCC Arrest Obasanjo And His Men?

Although many Nigerians rejoice over the arraignment of indicted governors, there are still skepticism in the country, with many wondering when EFCC will arrest those perceived to be former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s men, who have equally vandalized the economy. The roll of these men is breath taking, just as they cut across the geopolitical zones. They include:

Bode George

The alleged mess he committed at the Nigeria Ports Authority is saddening, where N45 billion scam was uncovered. Bode George, who is Obasanjo’s crony, was the chairman of the Board of NPA. But to date, neither Bode George nor his alleged co-fraudsters in NPA has been indicted for embezzlement.

Mr. Makanjuola

He was the former permanent secretary of the Defence Ministry, who was sacked for proven cases of embezzlement of public fund, following a defence contract scam. The Israel Aeronautics Defence Systems contract of $250 million was allegedly inflated by at least $100 million. Despite the high cost, the presidency (Obasanjo) was said to have ordered for a 10 per cent down payment. Makanjuola was only sacked, but up till date, he has not been hounded by the EFCC.

Ibrahim Mantu

His role in the Third Term ship wreck should not go uninvestigated by EFCC. He was alleged to be the arrowhead in the sharing of the over N50 billion third term money to some gullible, greedy and unpatriotic legislators in the last National Assembly. But even though he has since found his rightful place in the decayed portion of history, yet his alleged sins should not be swept under the carpet by a sanitising society.

Goodluck Jonathan

He was the last governor of Bayelsa State and now the vice president. Though he was a governor for barely a year, yet his people have complained bitterly over the stagnated development which characterised his short stint. The incumbent governor of the state, speaking through his special adviser, Dr. George Fente, told the press last week that the state would not reveal its state of finance, so as not to embarrass the vice president. He was even quoted to have said, “If the EFCC will do its work well, some people should be running away from Bayelsa.”

Tony Anenih

Although he later feel out with former President Obasanjo during the third term melodrama, he was enmeshed, allegedly, in messy deals while his romance with Obasanjo lasted. As the chairman of Board of Trustees of PDP, he was among others said to have coerced governors under PDP to make unnecessary payments to the party, which as at the last counts ran into billions of naira.

He impoverished the Nigerian state when he was the works minister. He alleged collected a whopping N420 billion for road construction and rehabilitation, but condition of the roads worsened thereafter.

Adamu Aliero

His younger brother allegedly embezzled N8 billion. The former governor defected to PDP and delivered the state to PDP. EFCC may wish to extend its search light on this scam.

Peter Odili

He was penciled for vice presidential post but had to be dropped because he allegedly had no clean record. The Rivers State Independent Power Project, for which his government pumped in billions of naira is considered a white elephant project. During the last electioneering campaigns, N3 billion was allegedly found in his lodge. Although the EFCC is privy to some of the alleged scam of Odili, yet he has not been arrested and charged, like his Jigawa and Abia colleagues.

Saminu Turaki

He is presently with EFCC and has fingered Andy Uba as the conduit pipe through which the former Jigawa State governor transferred hard currencies to the third term project of Obasanjo.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

He is alleged to be the master thief and breacher of due process, even though he pretended to be incorruptible. His crime at the floor of the last Assembly, both fraudulent and rascality were filled to the brim. The then assembly committee that probed the excess crude oil scam discovered that N2 trillion was withdrawn from excess crude oil account by the former president, without the National Assembly’s approval. The assembly also discovered that some of the withdrawn money bore strange remarks, like “purpose not stated.”

Due to local and international pressure on Obasanjo, he constituted an audit firm, HART group to audit the accounts of NNPC early last year – after seven years of unaudited account. The auditors discovered that over $3 billion earned by the country was not remitted to the treasury and probably embezzled by officials of NNPC, under the supervision and collaboration of the president himself.

Obasanjo allegedly spent N310 billion as fuel subsidy for 18 months and another N27 million on tax collection, without approval of NASS.

The EFCC should therefore spread its dragnets across board, to gain more support, cooperation and appreciation from public court.

$$$ Salaries

Two things I'd do if I am the ministers: 1. Get a sound lawyer to appeal the decision 2) Assemble the proof that DOCUMENTED terms of taking the job includes the denomination of salaries in dollars.

I do not know the position of the law, but, ordinarily, the burden of the decision to pay the NEGOTIATED salary should rest on the executor.

Some contracts in Nigeria, including job contracts, are, after all, still denominated in foreign currencies, depending on the negotiated terms and the necessary justification.

Re: Barr. Dan Ojo (San)

My forum members, do not be too hard on the honourable Barr. Dan Ojo (SAN). He is just one in millions of the kind of graduates that Nigeria is producing. When our money is used to support a stupid project like the third term agenda as Turaki did, used to build hospitals for a daughter in South Africa like Odili did or used to rent houses for girlfriends like Atiku did, instead of funding the education system, what do you expect from Law graduates or any graduate for that matter?

The Refund of the Dollar Salaries

My take on this judgement is that it has some merits and demerits. The two ministers did not pay themselves but someone did and that person is law-breaking OBJ. If those two were paid in dollar or pounds just as consultants, no one will surely complain, but the fact remains that OBJ broke the law of the land by selecting two ministers from many to pay differently in foreign currency and into foreign accounts which contravents the law of the land.

The judges were right to order them to refund the money because the process of paying them was against the law even if they are not at fault or to blame for it. OBJ should be sued by those two for decieving them into breaking the law and they should recover their money from him. Even if a man legitimately bought an item but later found out that the goods he bought out of ignorance was originally stolen, he is still going to forfeit the goods because the law is clear on possessing a stolen item eventhough obtained legitimately.

They should have asked their employers about the implications of breaking the law of the land to pay them, in that, they should had been covered. That is the real ISSUE. I feel sorry for them but, but law is not based on emotions but on facts. Next time they should work as consultants rather than public office holder, whose salaries are already determined by law aforehand.

Attention: Igbo Man

Despite all the emotions, I think you are spot on. Whether we carry a card as members or not, we are all emotional members of MASSOB if we are honest to ourselves as Easterners/Igbomen.

As long as Ralph Uwazuruike, Uchenna Madu and many other faceless of our brothers and sisters are still wasting in OBJ/Yar Adua's gulags, we are all prisoners. Our forefathers use to say that it not madman that get embarrassed but the relatives of the madman, since the madman is not even concious of his nakedness.
A word of wisdom for our governors, Rep members, Senators, jostling ministerial candidate and advisers. You can never sleep well without Uwazuruike's image in gulag causing you nightmares.

BARR. Dan Ojo & Peoples wey no sabi

Unconventional tiers of government (and institutions) exist in Nigeria, like in the one or two liquor bars that I feature whenever I descend on Nigeria.

Now, these institutions pride themselves of far superior shenanigans than the conventional Nigerian institution. They wear their dignity like a punk star’s neck chain. And they strive to preserve whatever pride are left of the several battles with the daily realities of their normal existence.

Which, probably, is one of the reasons I chose to identify with my own local joint?

Another thing of note, about my joint is that, like Nigeria, we appreciate the power of the office, and the glamour of the title. But, unlike Nigeria, we allow the office and the title to pick the anointed.

Which is why we have deserving men (and women) of the office: a governor, a bishop, a pope, a chief whip, couple of generals, 3 or 4 chairmen, and, definitely, several barristers (or Barr.), whose discordant cacophony (after the due homage to NBL and Guinness) will send Gani Fawehinmi back to the mother in trepidation. This has nothing to do with the structure of grammar and logic, but with the sheer gymnastics of both.

I have seen, not a few number of hopeless cases, expressly heard (unlike Nigeria) and dismissed, in my brief but cherished stint.

Omo and Olla (no title) are apparently out of tune with the matters and affairs of the Nigerian grass roots. I will therefore apologize, on their ignorant behalf, to Barr. Dan Ojo (SAN).

Omo and Olla (no titles) should normally be fined 4 cartons of chilled guilder and odeku, mixed, (to complete the letters of Barr); and four 'hotting' pots of isi ewu (horns attached). But, again, I shall extend my appeal to Barr. Dan Ojo (SAN), and the committee of elders, to permit a bygone.

I admit that I am a mere practitioner, still aspiring for the SAN. But, my trust and hope is that BARR Ojo (SAN) will forgive my intervention in this matter. These are, after all, two ordinary men of no visible title. Two mere opetus, wey no sabi.

BARR. DAN

Are you realy a barr., or can you tell us the meaning of BARR.
It is strange that a BARR. will write in such a poor way.
Take time to check the stuctures of your sentences well so that you may achieve your aim, communicate.
Delete the SAN form your name, it is a mockery.
