RE:Justice!

The writer of the article FORTY YEARS AFTER THE DEMISE OF BIAFRA:
A WEAK ATTEMPT AT INTER-ETHNIC INTEGRATION
is not Ichie Ezinwanne, Mazi Kendo or Stanley. He is a member of the academia. A politician may not come close to being straight forward as Ben Okolo did. However, it does not mean that the heart of every Igbo man(including that of the politicians) is dead to the injustices of the past.

In this forum, we have been calling for posthumous prosecution of late Awolowo and the likes of Benjamin Adekunle a.k.a scorpion.

There is no gainsaying that, without the Yoruba factor, Nigeria may have moved forward, integration would probably have taken effect. But this is a country so unfortunate that she harbors people who stand between peace and progress.

After 40 years of massacring the Igbos, Nigerians harass Igbos and "force" us to pretend that nothing happened, or that nothing is still happening while we are still subdued. It is not working!!!

A nation of lies

Nigeria as a state is based on foundation of clay, lies, deceit and follies. These were as a result of selfish and sectional interests. The hatchet job the Northern dominated military juntas left, is being continued through a Constitution that was drafted to be manipulated by a section of the country and a Northern dominated military, so sure of dictating the tune in the Fourth Republic, but did not count on President Obasanjo’s masterstroke in rendering that design impotent, by wiping out the entire political military class. While the military was kept in check for the past 10 years, the Constitution they left in their wake, continues to strangle Nigeria to its last breath.
That Constitution made an otherwise mundane or innocuous state political units of administrative convenience, as the Local Governments, the business of the Federal Government, with direct revenue allocation. The US with a population of 300+ million, has a seeming disproportionate number of LGs(Counties) of 3065 compared Nigeria’s 774 LGs with official but fake population of 150 million. As the case in Nigeria, the size, number and distribution of these LGs have no rhyme or rythm. Texas with a population of 24 million have 254 LGs and California with a population of 36 million have only 57! Delaware, not the smallest in size or population out the 50 states has only 3 LGs! It does not matter. LGs are exclusive business of states, without VAT, excess crude or other statutory allocations to them from the Treasury Dept in Washington, DC, as is the case in Nigeria.
More than half of all salaries and compensations paid in the Nigeria public sector, is consumed at the LGAs! Kano State gets more through LG and LG based VAT statutory allocations, than it gets through State allocations, which it gets lion’s share nonetheless. The bloated ministerial list is also a dictate of that Constitution.
The US has 50 states and territories. Nigeria is precisely the size of the States of Texas and Oregon combined. Kano State claims 3 times the population of Oregon State, which is 28th in population and 9th in land mass, in the US. And by the same self deceit, Lagos with its claim of almost 10 Million people, is more populous than New York City or Los Angeles County. Revenue and development are assigned based on these ridiculous official population estimates.
Nigerians appear to be proud of this ridiculously inflated population figures, where the arid Sahel states of Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna and Katsina led the pack, with Lagos and Oyo States added for good measure of Northwest/Southwest balancing, without reasoning things out. A population of 150 million in a country the size of Nigeria, will be very palpable, not to talk of the arid Sahel region leading the lush rain forest South in such figures. Yet the Constitution recognized population as basis for a lot of things.
We need a new federal constitution as a matter of urgency, that will take advantage of both the military and civilian contemporary political history/experience of Nigeria. Anything less would continue to be a square peg in a round hole. A true federal constitution will relieve a lot of tension in Nigeria, and set the country on a true part for development.

April 19, 2010 at 7:26 amNigeria has come to be a mocked nation because there is no commitment on the part of our leaders, who are not passionate with the country. They do not even believe in the country. As for the Igbos, they are all the other tribes are not; democratic, ambitious, geographically mobile and peace loving. The rest of the country should immitate them and come out of sentiments. Due to sentiments crime is not punished because it will mean punishing my brother, but let us see how far we can go on.

Ugu Ugo is a demon

I do not know where this demon is coming from, who said I should think. Whatever God does is good. All those events that happened could not have been avoided the living and the dead, even now there has not been any peace in this world not to talk of Nigeria.

How on earth will you condemn your leaders, just because God gave them the opportunity to be your leader. Upon their sins which you have judged, Jesus has forgiven them. Again it does not mean you are better than IBB in any way physically and spiritually.

You are just making a hell of noise, we the citizen will decide and we will prevail.

reply to oladele Johnson

Pastor Tunde Bakare is a Nigerian. Nigeria constitution gives everyone the freedom of expression. Therefore Pastor Tunde Bakare as a Nigerian is only exercising his right to air his views about the state of Nation. It will be rude of anybody to tell him to shut up. He is not an alien, therefore whether as minister a of God or not, he has the right to participate in the matters that can bring progress and development to the country.
Mr Oladele Johnson should always be polite in selection and the use of his words.
Thanks

FORTY YEARS AFTER THE DEMISE OF BIAFRA:
A WEAK ATTEMPT AT INTER-ETHNIC INTEGRATION:
By Ben Okolo:
Published in the Nigeria World:

May 30 1970 still remains a day worthy of note in the annals of Nigeria's history. It was the day the 30th month old Republic of Biafra, a secessionist project of the former Eastern Region and part of the mainly Igbo speaking people of the Mid-Western Region, were subsumed once again into Nigeria. The declaration of the independent state of Biafra in 1967 occasioned by the pogrom of the indigenes of both regions, particularly the Igbo; eventually led to a declaration of war against the Odumegwu Ojukwu led 'rebels' by Yakubu Gowon, in which about 3.1 million Biafrans lost their lives.

The proclamation of a 'no victor' 'no vanquished' at the end of hostilities was aimed at embedding in the Nigerian psyche a national healing, in order for a proper integration of the erstwhile opposing groups, but more particularly to integrate the more than 250 different ethnic groups into one nation. The extent to which this integration has failed is exemplified by the continued conflicts in Nigeria, especially those premised on politicisation of ethnicity and religion. One could also argue that the perceived marginalisation of the erstwhile Biafran region does not live the spirit of the proclamation, as anecdotal evidence seem to suggest that the erstwhile 'Biafrans' are still being sidelined in the politics of Nigeria and infrastructural development. For instance, it is no longer news that most of the federal roads located in the eastern states are in serious state of disrepair, while those in other parts of the country are in better condition. Up until very recently, the thought of an Igbo serving as one of the Service Chiefs was a mirage, not to talk of an Igbo president. Furthermore, the echoes of resistance against the Nigerian state by elements identifying themselves as Members for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) is indicative of a failed post conflict reintegration.

Nigeria, it must be observed, is not the only country in Africa that has experienced civil war or other types of violent conflict in its post colonial existence. However, reintegration, which should be a key factor in post conflict rebuilding has either been neglected in Nigeria's case or never existed as part of the policy. A study of the worst case of acknowledged genocide in Africa - Rwanda - reveals that ethnic reintegration was paramount in its post conflict peacebuilding initiatives. The combination of western and local initiatives has helped Rwanda on the part of its reintegration. However, above all, there were determined efforts by the two erstwhile enemies - Hutu and Tutsi - to reconcile and move ahead. That is what seems to be lacking in Nigeria; there is still that lack of trust across ethnic lines. One other factor posited by scholars and analysts for the failure of the reintegration project in Nigeria is the non prosecution of those that violated international humanitarian law during the war and other conflicts in Nigeria. The impression this has, therefore, created in the minds of many is that impunity is tolerated in Nigeria, and that lives of civilians does not matter much to the government.

In our Rwandan example, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) was instrumental in sending a message to the Rwandese that impunity for crimes against humanity and genocide cannot be condoned. At the national level, the institution of the Gacaca justice system - a traditional mechanism used to adjudicate minor crimes - helped in conferring ownership of the justice process on Rwandese, especially on the surviving victims and their relations. The first step, therefore, towards a genuine integration is the acknowledgment of wrongdoings by those that prosecuted the war against the civilian population of the eastern and mid-western regions.

While it is understandable that civilian casualty could occur during such wars resulting from collateral damage, what is not acceptable in international humanitarian law is that civilians would be the primary focus of such attacks as witnessed during the civil war. It is a documented fact for instance that the Nigerian military massacred a large civilian population at Asaba. The massacre, which some have referred to as genocide was targeted against mainly the male population. It is instructive to note that there has been no attempt to bring those that participated in that act to justice, either at domestic or international criminal courts; and some of them are still parading themselves as leaders of thought in Africa.

Furthermore, genuine acts of reconciliation should be the focus of the government assisted by the Civil Society Organisations. It must be stated however, that there can be no real reconciliation without TRUTH. This, therefore, entails a full disclosure by those involved in the various atrocities that litter the religio-political history of Nigeria. While some may argue that 40 years is too long a time to go back into history, especially concerning an event that is better forgotten; it is in fact because of the reason that Nigeria has continued to shy away from revisiting the issue in a most sincere manner that it continues to have repeated acts of conflicts. The best memorial for those that lost their lives through the pogrom of the 1960s is to prosecute those that committed the atrocities, or at the very least, have them acknowledge their wrongdoing, apologise and make peace with the survivors and relations of the dead; anything short of this, Nigeria will still be hooked to the cycle of violence.

Deji of Akure in street fight

The paramount ruler of Akureland known as the Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adesina on Sunday evening threw decorum into the winds as he engaged one of his queens in a street fight along Hospital Road in Akure. The traditional ruler who was in company with his youngest queen, Olori Remi engaged the older Olori, Bolanle Adesina who had moved out of the palace in the last two years in a fight to finish.

The king was said to have allegedly engaged his estranged wife in fisticuffs.
It took the timely intervention of men of the state police command to bring the situation under control as the monarch was whisked away.
While trying to escape from the scene of the incident, the monarch fell into a drainage along the road and his cap fell off his head.

However, the king’s Pathfinder Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked “Deji of Akure” was seriously damaged by irate youths who were irked by his action.
The youths who gathered in their hundreds, smashed the windscreen and the four side windows to register their displeasure over the monarch’s persistent unruly behaviour.

The incident, it was learnt, started around 5.30 pm on Sunday when the traditional ruler and his latest queen, Remi invaded the residence of Olori Bolanle at 141, Hospital Road Akure in the SUV and another Toyota Starlet marked Ondo AL 963AKR.
Olori Bolanle, it was learnt, on sighting the monarch and his wife alighting from their vehicle quickly sneaked into her room and asked the people around to tell them she was not around.

When Olori Bolanle could not be found, the monarch was alleged to have ordered stern looking youths that accompanied him to destroy and burn down the building.
It was at this stage, Daily Sun learnt that Olori Bolanle had to come out from hiding to challenge the invaders on the reason they invaded her house.
This was said to have infuriated the king who allegedly directed his aides to pour hot ashes believed to have been mixed with other substances on her.

In an attempt to prevent the Oba Adesina from attacking Bolanle, one of the women at the scene was hit by the substance which peeled off her arms.
The queen that accompanied the monarch was alleged to have hit Bolanle with a big plank. The attack led to serious fight between the two women.
Irked by the situation, the younger brother of the estranged Olori and some youths resisted what they termed “injustice meted to Olori Bolanle.”
The rampaging youths descended on the monarch and his entourage who later scrambled for safety.
The youths would have lynched the Oba but for the intervention of the officer-in-charge of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) who was contacted by people living in the area.

The Oba Adesina and Olori Bolanle had not been in good terms, since the monarch married the new wife.
The situation was said to have forced Olori Bolanle to pack out of the palace to her parents’ home.
The royal father was said to have invaded the in-law’s home allegedly to retrieve property in the estranged wife’s possession, including a Nissan Xterra SUV.
While narrating her own side of the story, Olori Bolanle who was lying critically ill at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, said she was shocked when the monarch and his new queen invaded her home.

The woman, who was in pains from the burnt she sustained from the substance allegedly poured on her by the king said she had to come out from her hiding when the king invaded her residence with his new queen and people suspected to be thugs.
“I had to block my face because they wanted to pour the substance on me to deface me. But, I was lucky to have blocked it with my two hands. Despite the fact that I was forced out of the palace without the opportunity to take my belongings, Oba Adesina still came to my house to fight me for unjust cause.
“When I noticed that there was nothing I could do, I had to call the police who responded swiftly to my distress call. It took the intervention of the police to put the situation under control.”

Olori Bolanle urged security operatives to beef up security around her to save her from further attack.
All efforts to get the reaction of the monarch proved abortive as he refused to comment on the issue when contacted on his cell phone.
He told journalists to go ahead with their publication.
The state Commissioner of Police, Magaji Nasarawa while confirming the story in a telephone interview said the Deji went to his in-law’s house to foment trouble openly.
The CP said it was his men who rescued the monarch from the hands of irate youths.

Hahahaha! Imortala...

Let's see if they won't fall for it. Such things as "immortalize" and "partying" make sense to some.

Ehe, Peter M, blood is thicker than water, that's again a proverb. It is a very despicable action to turn a brother against brother. It does not usually end well for the schemer of such damnable plan. Brothers usually realize they are brothers when the dust settles. Only the foolish brothers allow the chasm created by the evil one to widen when the opportunity to close it up is at sight. And, thankfully, the parable of the sower plays out in this kind of circumstance. More often than not, the man who puts asunder between brothers, parents and children, husband and wife, mother and child, ends up reaping many fold worse than the atrocity he created. The brothers usually turn their anger against him.

This is our situation in Nigeria. The dust is settling. Many Igbos are appreciating the enormity of the psychological damage wrought against us by Nigeria. And this is far more damaging than we can comprehend at the moment.

We began from somewhere. Then a hiatus. We start again. This is a stage of self realization, which normally comes before self actualization. Therefore, when you are worried with such things our detractors promote most, I encourage you to ignore them.

I invite you to watch the movie, "escape from Sorbibor"-It sounds correct, but pls check the spelling in case you are interested. This movie depicts the kind of psychological entrapment we suffer in this country. In this movie, a Jew was authorized by the captors to whip fellow Jews in the concentration camp. But was he happy doing the job? No. So a plan was hatched. At the end some Jews, because of the fear of the unknown, refused to hit the gate when freedom was secured eventually. Please watch this movie if you haven't.

We must be free from Nigeria. Bear this in mind at all times.
